Banyan Tree opens Macau resort

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Banyan Tree opens Macau resort.

The new Banyan Tree Macau has opened within the US$2 billion Galaxy Macau resort complex, providing a luxurious retreat for gamers.

The all-suite resort offers such extras as a relaxation pool in every room and the brand’s signature villas situated beside the resort’s unique rooftop wave pool.

As more and more tourists head to China, major tourism operators are looking for new and improved methods to grab their share of the market.

It is “designed to be the city’s first five-star urban resort,” according to Banyan Tree Holdings executive chairman Ho Kwon Ping.

Macau has in recent years seen massive casino-resort developments along its Cotai Strip establish the city as the world’s undisputed gaming capital.

With 25 million tourists entering the city last year it has become one of the world’s hottest destinations along the way.

But the opening of the Banyan Tree marks a change in tact as the property promotes itself as being distinct from the casino experience.

“Banyan Tree Macau is designed for travelers looking to immerse themselves in the excitement of Cotai’s entertainment district, but who still desire their own private sanctuary in which to relax,” said Rudy Oretti, The Banyan Tree Macau’s GM.

Hilton has meanwhile announced that it plans to have 100 hotels open for business in China by 2014 — four times the amount it currently has in a move that will make the country the company’s biggest market outside the United States.

That follows the revelation from the InterContinental Hotels Group that one in four of its new hotel rooms opened in the next five years will be in China.

A spokesman for the Hilton said the growth the Chinese tourism industry was now experiencing was a “once-in-a-generation” opportunity.

Marriott to build New York’s tallest hotel

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Marriott to build New York’s tallest hotel.

Global hotel chain Marriott, which operates 3,600 hotels around the world, has announced plans to build the tallest hotel in New York City.

The brand plans to build a new 68-story skyscraper on Manhattan’s 54th Street to house two hotels under the brands Courtyard by Marriott and Residence Inn.

The tower will be designed by Nobutaka Ashihara, an established New York architect who designed Lexington House Hotel, Hotel Indigo on 28th Street and Courtyard by Marriott Times Square, and is set to be 752 feet (229 meters) high.

The 378-room Courtyard hotel will occupy the lower floors, while guests for the 261-room Residence Inn will stay on floors 36 through 64, although both hotels will have separate banks of elevators in the arrival lobby on 54th Street.

The second floor will be given over to a restaurant, while the fifth floor will offer a lounge and terrace with an outdoor seating area that overlooks Broadway.

A shared fitness center for both hotels will be offered on the fourth floor, Marriott said August 10.

Courtyard is a mid-scale hotel brand and Residence Inn is Marriott’s extended-stay offering, so guests in the upper hotel will have access to kitchens and other “homely” amenities — although those wanting a more upscale experience may be better off staying at the nearby Ritz-Carlton.

New York has seen a flurry of new high-rise hotels over the past year, with InterContinental, W Hotels and Yotel all opening up in skyscrapers.

World’s Biggest Best Western Opens in Russia

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents World’s Biggest Best Western Opens in Russia.

Global hotel chain Best Western, which runs over 4,000 hotels, has opened its largest property in the world in the Russian capital, Moscow.

The chain announced August 9 that the Best Western Vega Hotel & Convention Center had officially opened its doors in the historical district of Izmaylovo in Moscow.

Originally built in 1980, the building has been significantly remodeled and will now operate as a three-star hotel, with 970 guest rooms.

It features three restaurants and a lobby bar, including a full service Russian restaurant, a mid-scale buffet and French pastry cafe and coffee shop, as well as a fitness facility and spa with Turkish baths and a Finnish sauna.

It is also the first Russian property operated by Best Western, which holds the title of the world’s largest hotel brand and has recently been targeting growth in eastern Europe, opening hotels in Moldova and Ukraine.

However, with local reports suggest Moscow’s budget accommodation sector is currently soaring, Best Western is likely to have some stiff competition to attract travelers.

According to The Moscow Times, there are now 59 hostels in the city, a number that has jumped by 30 percent in the last two months as 14 new hostels opened their doors in the Russian capital.

Jumeirah opens first European property in Frankfurt

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Jumeirah opens first European property in Frankfurt.

Dubai-based luxury hotel chain Jumeirah has opened its first property in mainland Europe.

The brand, which operates several high-profile properties in the Middle East including the Jumeirah Beach Hotel and the ‘seven star’ Burj Al Arab,

Jumeirah welcomed its first guests to its new Frankfurt property August 1, ahead of the official opening in September.

The hotel is spread across 25 floors in a striking new building and contains a total of 218 rooms in the center of the busy German city, which already boasts several luxury names such as Rocco Forte, Westin Grand and InterContinental.

However, with all rooms measuring 35 square meters and above, Jumeirah says its hotel offers the largest rooms in Frankfurt.

On the ground floor guests can visit a specialist chocolaterie and patisserie, as well as a lobby bar, with a fireplace and views over the Thurn-und-Taxis Palais.

The hotel’s signature restaurant, Max on One, is managed by Executive Chef Martin Steiner and serves “innovative interpretations” of regional and German dishes.

Unsurprisingly, the new building boasts a host of green technology, including an air conditioning system which regulates the temperature using heat detectors and motion sensors to minimize wasted usage.

Talise, the hotel’s signature spa, features two saunas, freestanding bathtubs and tropical rain showers, although more active guests can use the neighboring Premium Fitness First health club.

Although Frankfurt is currently the only Jumeirah property on the European continent, it will be joined by a luxury property at Port Soller, Mallorca, in Spring 2012.

InterContinental launches half-price points deals

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents InterContinental launches half-price points deals.

Members of the InterContinental hotels loyalty program are to be offered the chance to snap up last-minute hotel deals on points, the company announced August 1.

Last Minute Rewards will offer Priority Club members the chance to redeem hotel nights for 50 percent fewer points than they would otherwise be offered at.

The promotion will be valid at nearly 90 select hotels around the world, including properties in popular holiday destinations such as Orlando, Florida; Berlin; Paris; Shanghai; Bangkok; and Seoul.

However, guests can only redeem Last Minute Reward Nights on the first full weekend of every month, considerably reducing the flexibility of the program — this month, for example, the offer is valid for stays August 5 through 7 only.

For travelers who need more flexibility, Ritz-Carlton is also offering a summer points promotion offering 30,000 bonus points to holidaymakers registered with Ritz-Carlton Rewards.

Guests must register for the program before August 15 and stay for four more consecutive nights before September 9 to receive the 30,000 bonus, which can be used to pay for free stays, spa treatments, golf and other experiences.

Abu Dhabi posts record tourist results

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Abu Dhabi posts record tourist results.

A fall in Abu Dhabi‘s hotel prices has prompted a record year for the Emirate so far, according to figures released July 27.

The first six months of 2011 showed the best hotel results in the history of the country, with the number of visitors climbing 11 percent to just over one million.

Authorities hope to break the two million visitor target for the first time this year.

The figures also suggested that people are staying 13 percent longer in the country than in 2010, with the average length of a stay just under three nights.

According to the tourist board, average room rates have fallen by 15 percent compared to the same period in 2010, making Abu Dhabi a more affordable destination than upscale competitors such as Paris, New York or Tokyo.

That trend could also continue, with a glut of new hotels expected to open in the emirate before the year is out — a total of ten luxury five-star properties will open their doors in the coming months.

Big names include Westin, Anantara, Hyatt, Park Hyatt, St Regis, Rocco Forte Hotel, Ritz-Carlton and Jumeirah at Etihad Towers.

London’s new high-tech hotel

A new hotel in London billed as among the world’s most high-tech is gearing up for its grand opening next week.

The Eccleston Square Hotel is set to open its doors August 1, promising an urban cocoon with cutting edge technology inside a central London Georgian building.

Guests will also be able to duck into The Media Lounge, a screening room with a 103-inch Panasonic 3D media wall television.

Every room offers an iPad2, complete with an app which allows users to order hotel services, as well as a separate screen in the bathroom so guests don’t miss any of the action while in the bath.

Traditional Chinese welcome coming to Hilton hotels

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Traditional Chinese welcome coming to Hilton hotels.

Hilton is to roll out a global welcome program for Chinese travelers as it seeks to capture a larger part of China’s outbound tourism pie.

A new “Hilton Huanying” package will debut this August in 30 properties around the world, including San Francisco, New York City, Vancouver, London, Tokyo and Sydney.

The aim of the scheme is to make the steadily-increasing number of Chinese road-warriors feel at home, offering what Hilton describes as “familiar comforts” on arrival, in the rooms, and at breakfast.

This includes providing a front desk team member fluent in Chinese, tea kettles and selection of Chinese teas available in rooms, dedicated Chinese television channels and a welcome letter written in Chinese.

Participating hotels will also roll out specific breakfast offerings such as congee (rice porridge) with condiments, fried rice or fried noodles, a dim sum selection and fried dough fritters (crullers), along with Chinese tea.

Guests will also be offered Chinese cutlery utensils such as chopsticks, Chinese spoons and a soy sauce dish.

With the number of Chinese outbound tourists expected to reach a whopping 65 million this year, it’s somewhat unsurprising hotels are pulling out all the stops to attract them.

In April this year, French chain Accor announced a similar welcome package for Chinese and Indian guests would be offered by its brands in Australia, which include Sofitel, Pullman, Novotel, ibis and Motel 6, with additional food, entertainment and staff training to be rolled out to select properties.

Joie de Vivre Announces First Hotel Outside California

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Joie de Vivre Announces First Hotel Outside California.

Californian hotel favorite Joie de Vivre has announced Arizona is to be its first destination outside of its home state.

The boutique hotel chain, which operates over 30 properties in California, confirmed last week that it had selected Scottsdale, Arizona for its next opening, where it will compete with the likes of Fairmont, Four Seasons and W Hotels.

As of fall this year, The Drinkwater, a 195-room property in the popular town described by the New York Times as “a desert version of Miami’s South Beach,” will join the Joie de Vivre fold of properties as its easternmost outpost.

It is currently undergoing a considerable renovation and is expected to boast two pools, several bars and a restaurant, which Joie de Vivre says will be in partnership with a “high-profile chef,” when it reopens.

The hotel is just steps from the Scottsdale Center for Performing Arts, which welcomes over 200,000 visitors annually to events that include classical and world music, dance, jazz, theater, and festivals.

The first opening is likely to be the first of a sweep across the US, with Joie de Vivre promising last year that it would aim to open hotels in popular cities such as NYC, Chicago, Miami and Seattle as it began to spread its wings.

Crowne Plaza to trial “snore absorption room”

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Crowne Plaza to trial “snore absorption room”.

InterContinental-owned Crowne Plaza has unveiled a room designed to help the long-suffering partners of snoring sleepers get a good night’s sleep.

The chain said that a “snore absorption room” is being rolled out at nine of its global properties on a trial basis to see if it can help couples snooze in more comfort.

Based on “proven technology,” the room has been given a set of extra features Crowne Plaza believes could help reduce snoring, tackling both the snorer and the person being kept awake.

Walls of the room have been soundproofed, for instance, to help eliminate the reverberation of snoring, while a sound-absorbing headboard has been installed to minimize transference of the snores at close quarters.

Another high-tech addition is the white noise machine, which is designed to help drown out the noise of snoring and aid relaxation for the person kept awake.

For the snorer, the room features an anti-snoring bed wedge, designed to keep the person in a specific position which reduces the chance of the tongue falling backwards, a cause of snoring.

The guest also sleeps on an anti-snoring pillow, which uses magnetic fields which Crowne Plaza says open the airways and stiffen the upper palate, which vibrates during snoring.

It will be up to the guests to decide whether Crowne Plaza’s new room is the Holy Grail or a clever stunt, but according to the brand’s research, there should be no shortage of volunteers.

The chain said that UK research suggested that over a half of couples lose between one and five hours sleep a night due to the snoring and snuffling of their partners, adding up to a decade of lost sleep over a lifetime.

The trial will take place between June 27 – July 1 in:

Crowne Plaza London, The City
Crowne Plaza Hamburg, Germany
Crowne Plaza Paris République, France
Crowne Plaza Milan City, Italy (from June 29)
Crowne Plaza Madrid Airport, Spain (from June 29)
Crowne Plaza Vilamoura Algarve Hotel & Spa, Portugal (from June 29)
