Roberto cavalli's glam-slam hit
Gold fever hit the Milan runway with Roberto Cavalli’s ode to empire.
Roberto Cavalli: what a rush. Gold rush, that is. From the moment the first look revealed itself from behind smoky sheer screens – an outrageously embellished gilt blazer worn over a short, pleated floral skirt – it was clear that this collection would be a Cavalli hit. Part flapper, part rock chic, part Arabian princess, the combination of pretty silk dresses in colourful prints and hard-edged tuxedo dressing is a hard one to resist.
There was never a chance that the legendary label’s signature leopard print would be left out of the spotlight, this time integrated with lavish scarf prints, while white python stamped leather appeared almost like lace when worked into jackets and second-skin trousers, later appearing in black and gold. Chunky metal wrist cuffs and heavy black lacquered wedges accessorised the look.
If the makeshift scaffolding surrounding chandeliers suspended above the runway was anything to go by, the glamour was bound to eventually fracture. Sure enough, the dresses that followed appeared in glorious stages of deterioration. Beautiful yet seemingly decaying silk florals gave way to cobwebs of ebony beaded Chantilly lace creeping down the length of backless negligee gowns.
Hanging loose from the shoulders and hugging hips before cascading to the floor in soigné folds, the dresses would surely have piqued the interest of rock royal Courtney Love who sat front row, as would the cream tulle gowns embroidered with jet beads masquerading as full body tattoos. Gold tiaras hinted that this was a regal heiress in line to inherit a crumbling empire, but if this was the case then she was going out in style.

Fisker Surf Concept
The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Fisker Surf Concept.
Green car maker Fisker Automotive has confirmed that it is to launch a second model at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
Following in the footsteps of rival Tesla, which is working feverishly to ready its new Model S sedan for a launch next year, Fisker will expand its lineup beyond its $95,000 sports model with the launch of stablemate for the Fisker Karma.
The Fisker Surf concept was formally unveiled September 13 and is an extended-range electric vehicle, powered by batteries but capable of using a small gasoline generator to top up the charge when necessary.
Earlier this week, Fisker signed a deal with BMW to provide the powertrain for another model under development, a larger vehicle currently codenamed Project Nina.
The vehicle will be a mid-size premium sedan using a four-cylinder turbocharged engine supplied by BMW, and is set to be in showrooms around the world by 2013.

Infiniti Unveils Sebastian Vettel FX Special Edition
The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Infiniti Unveils Sebastian Vettel FX Special Edition.
Infiniti has released the first picture of a new concept vehicle designed in collaboration with Formula 1 driver Sebastien Vettel.
The brand remains tight-lipped about the rest of the model, which appears to be based on the Infiniti FX Crossover and will be fully unveiled by Vettel himself at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September.
The picture shows a more raked appearance for the five-door crossover, with a redesigned front grill and bumper and a prominent trailing roof spoiler.
It bears Vettel’s name on front fender badges and was described by the auto brand August 29 as his ‘perfect Infiniti’
In a video released by Infiniti last week, Vettel is seen discussing the design with Nissan’s design boss Shiro Nakamura.
Although a crossover model may not seem a natural choice for a Formula 1 driver to turn his hand to, Vettel is reported to own an Infiniti FX50 for use when he’s not in his Red Bull racecar — apparently because it has space for his mountain bike.

Richard Branson’s Necker Island Villa Burns in Fire
The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Richard Branson’s Necker Island Villa Burns in Fire.
Kate Winslet and members of Richard Branson‘s family escaped unharmed Monday when a lightning storm hit the Virgin tycoon’s Caribbean island home, which was destroyed in a blaze.
Winslet carried Branson’s 90-year-old mother Eve out of The Great House on Necker Island as the flames took hold in the early hours of the morning.
“She (Winslet) was staying there with her children and in fact it was she who carried my mother out of the house,” Branson told Britain’s ITV News.
“She swept her up into her arms and got them out of the house as fast as possible.”
Winslet said “it’s like being in a film set where you’re waiting for the words ‘cut’ but they just don’t come,” the entrepreneur added.
The 60-year-old founder of the Virgin empire had been staying in another property nearby with his wife Joan and son Sam, when the lightning struck the main house.
On his blog, Branson said: “We had a really bad tropical storm with winds up to 90 miles per hour. A big lightning storm came around 4:00 am and hit the house.”
“My son Sam rushed to the house and helped get everyone out. Kate Winslet, her BF and her family were there and Holly and some of her friends were also staying.
“The main house is completely destroyed. My office was based in the house and I have lost thousands of photographs which is very sad.
“We want to rebuild the house as soon as we can. We have a wonderful staff here and we want them to stay in work.
“We’ll all stay here for the time being. There’s a lot of damage and we won’t be able to stick it back together again right away. It was a beautiful house.”
Branson bought the island in the early 1980s. It is part of the British Virgin Islands.
Each bedroom in the house has its own balcony, king-size bed and en-suite bathroom.
“Set on the top of Devil’s Hill, this beautiful house is the heart of the island,” Necker’s website says.
“The jewel in the crown is the master suite which has its own jacuzzi and private terrace with panoramic views over the ocean and neighbouring islands.”
The island can be hired privately for $54,500 (38,000 euros) a night.

Jaguar releases first sketch of C-X16 concept
The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Jaguar releases first sketch of C-X16 concept.
Jaguar has released the first image of a new concept car due to be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September.
The C-X16 is described as a “production concept” and is likely to hint strongly at the future style of Jaguar vehicles when it is formally unveiled on September 13 at the huge motor show.
It has been designed by the same team that produced the Jaguar XJ, XF and XK, which is headed by the brand’s design chief Ian Callum, and is expected to be smaller than previous models in an attempt to compete with rivals such as Porsche.
The compact luxury model is expected to feature V6 petrol engines and a six-speed gearbox and could launch in 2013, with additional versions such as a coupe launching a few years later.
Jaguar, for its part, says that the model will show it retains “the ability to surprise, to excite and invigorate.”
It is one of a host of models expected to be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show, which opens September 15 in Frankfurt, Germany.

Audi confirms new electric vehicle concept
The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Audi confirms new electric vehicle concept.
Luxury German auto brand Audi has released the first images of a new electric concept car.
The “Urban Concept” is expected to be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September as part of a wider study on city mobility.
A lightweight model, the cockpit has been made of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer, which Audi says was the product of a new design process based on the principles of minimizing weight and increasing efficiency.
The design is intended to combine elements of a racing car, a roadster, a fun car and an urban car, says Audi, with a sleek body and large 21-inch free-standing wheels.
Entry to the vehicle is through the tailgate, although the roof can slide back, turning the car into a cabriolet so that the two low-set passengers can get a real feel for their surroundings.
It will be propelled by two proprietary e-tron electric motors, which Audi claims will offer powerful acceleration, and powered by a lithium-ion battery.
The model is expected to be on show alongside other electric concepts such as BMW’s i3 and i8, at the Frankfurt Motor Show, which runs September 15-25 in Frankfurt, Germany.

Marriott to build New York’s tallest hotel
The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Marriott to build New York’s tallest hotel.
Global hotel chain Marriott, which operates 3,600 hotels around the world, has announced plans to build the tallest hotel in New York City.
The brand plans to build a new 68-story skyscraper on Manhattan’s 54th Street to house two hotels under the brands Courtyard by Marriott and Residence Inn.
The tower will be designed by Nobutaka Ashihara, an established New York architect who designed Lexington House Hotel, Hotel Indigo on 28th Street and Courtyard by Marriott Times Square, and is set to be 752 feet (229 meters) high.
The 378-room Courtyard hotel will occupy the lower floors, while guests for the 261-room Residence Inn will stay on floors 36 through 64, although both hotels will have separate banks of elevators in the arrival lobby on 54th Street.
The second floor will be given over to a restaurant, while the fifth floor will offer a lounge and terrace with an outdoor seating area that overlooks Broadway.
A shared fitness center for both hotels will be offered on the fourth floor, Marriott said August 10.
Courtyard is a mid-scale hotel brand and Residence Inn is Marriott’s extended-stay offering, so guests in the upper hotel will have access to kitchens and other “homely” amenities — although those wanting a more upscale experience may be better off staying at the nearby Ritz-Carlton.
New York has seen a flurry of new high-rise hotels over the past year, with InterContinental, W Hotels and Yotel all opening up in skyscrapers.

Louboutin loses to YSL in battle of red soles
The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Louboutin loses to YSL in battle of red soles.
A fight by Christian Louboutin for the exclusive right to put red soles on shoes got kicked out of court Wednesday in a victory for rival Yves Saint Laurent.
The legal battle in a New York court pitted two fashion leaders in a bitter contest for what Louboutin said was the soul of its extravagantly expensive shoes — the signature scarlet outsole.
In federal court, US District Judge Victor Marrero ruled that Louboutin — even if widely recognized for its trailblazing use of red under the shoe — could not stop competitors like YSL from doing the same thing.
“Because in the fashion industry color serves ornamental and aesthetic functions vital to robust competition, the court finds that Louboutin is unlikely to be able to prove that its red outsole brand is entitled to trademark protection,” said Marrero, who revealed himself as an ardent admirer of the sexy slip-ons.
The million-dollar suit for “trademark infringement, unfair competition and false designation of origin” was filed in April in New York claiming that a series of YSL shoes would mislead consumers familiar with Louboutin’s scarlet soles.
An attorney for Louboutin told AFP he was “profoundly disappointed.”
“Even though the judge agreed that Louboutin’s red sole mark was famous and well known, he appears to have concluded ‘sua sponte’ that in the fashion industry one ought not be able to use a single color as a trademark,” Harley Lewin added.
“We are currently evaluating all alternatives.”
Louboutin’s glam footwear was featured on the consumer-worshipping television series “Sex and the City” and sells about 240,000 pairs each year in the United States alone, with revenues of about $135 million.
A pair typically costs hundreds of dollars, but can sell for far more, with the Maggie Leopard-Toe Pump, complete with red-lacquered under soles, listed at $1,095 in the Neiman Marcus department store.
Peppering his ruling with references to sources as diverse as pop star Jennifer Lopez and poet Walt Whitman, Marrero acknowledged Christian Louboutin’s “bright idea.”
Louboutin’s “bold divergence from the worn path paid its dividends,” he said.
The judge even waxed lyrically about the sheer appeal of the shoes.
“When Hollywood starlets cross red carpets and high fashion models strut runways and heads turn and eyes drop to the celebrities’ feet, lacquered red outsoles on high-heeled, black shoes flaunt a glamorous statement that pops out at once,” he wrote.
But allowing the color red to be trademarked was a step too far — even for shoes that good, ruled Marrero.
“Awarding one participant in the designer shoe market a monopoly on the color red would impermissibly hinder competition among other participants. YSL has various reasons for seeking to use red on its outsoles.”
YSL’s spat with Louboutin was over four shoes from the fashion house’s 2011 Cruise collection: the Tribute, Tribtoo, Palais and Woodstock models. They all have red outsoles.
However, YSL says it has featured red soles all the way back to the 1970s.
As for Christian Louboutin’s claim to a breakthrough in fashion design, YSL is scornful.
The idea for red soles was “copied from King Louis XIV’s red-heeled dancing shoes or Dorothy’s famous ruby slippers in ‘The Wizard of Oz,’” Judge Marrero quoted YSL as saying.

Save and share Louboutin loses to YSL in battle of red soles

Infiniti partners with celebrity chefs
The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Infiniti partners with celebrity chefs.
Infiniti is to team up with a group of leading chefs to add extra elegance to a new concept set to be unveiled as part of the Monterey Auto Week in California.
The Japanese brand is working with Hearst Magazines to showcase the new Infiniti JX Concept, which will be revealed at the 61st Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
As part of the reveal, chocolate, cheese and wine tasting sessions have been scheduled, as well as cooking demonstrations from US celebrity chefs including Tyler Florence, Marc Forgione, and Andrew Carmellini.
The new Infiniti JX concept is set to be a close representation of the production version of the 2013 Infiniti JX, which will be formally unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November.
The seven-passenger model uses a three-row layout and is a luxury crossover aimed at large families, described by an Infiniti spokesperson as “a seven passenger antidote to the ho-hum luxury crossovers that are out there right now.”
Details are still thin on the ground, but Infiniti has confirmed that it will feature “innovative” third row access, along with premium interiors and an “advanced” telematics and entertainment system.
It will be available at Infiniti retailers from spring next year, although no pricing has been confirmed.
Monterey Auto Week runs August 15-21 and culminates with the annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on August 21, one of the world’s most prestigious classic car shows.

Jumeirah opens first European property in Frankfurt
The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Jumeirah opens first European property in Frankfurt.
Dubai-based luxury hotel chain Jumeirah has opened its first property in mainland Europe.
The brand, which operates several high-profile properties in the Middle East including the Jumeirah Beach Hotel and the ‘seven star’ Burj Al Arab,
Jumeirah welcomed its first guests to its new Frankfurt property August 1, ahead of the official opening in September.
The hotel is spread across 25 floors in a striking new building and contains a total of 218 rooms in the center of the busy German city, which already boasts several luxury names such as Rocco Forte, Westin Grand and InterContinental.
However, with all rooms measuring 35 square meters and above, Jumeirah says its hotel offers the largest rooms in Frankfurt.
On the ground floor guests can visit a specialist chocolaterie and patisserie, as well as a lobby bar, with a fireplace and views over the Thurn-und-Taxis Palais.
The hotel’s signature restaurant, Max on One, is managed by Executive Chef Martin Steiner and serves “innovative interpretations” of regional and German dishes.
Unsurprisingly, the new building boasts a host of green technology, including an air conditioning system which regulates the temperature using heat detectors and motion sensors to minimize wasted usage.
Talise, the hotel’s signature spa, features two saunas, freestanding bathtubs and tropical rain showers, although more active guests can use the neighboring Premium Fitness First health club.
Although Frankfurt is currently the only Jumeirah property on the European continent, it will be joined by a luxury property at Port Soller, Mallorca, in Spring 2012.

InterContinental launches half-price points deals
The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents InterContinental launches half-price points deals.
Members of the InterContinental hotels loyalty program are to be offered the chance to snap up last-minute hotel deals on points, the company announced August 1.
Last Minute Rewards will offer Priority Club members the chance to redeem hotel nights for 50 percent fewer points than they would otherwise be offered at.
The promotion will be valid at nearly 90 select hotels around the world, including properties in popular holiday destinations such as Orlando, Florida; Berlin; Paris; Shanghai; Bangkok; and Seoul.
However, guests can only redeem Last Minute Reward Nights on the first full weekend of every month, considerably reducing the flexibility of the program — this month, for example, the offer is valid for stays August 5 through 7 only.
For travelers who need more flexibility, Ritz-Carlton is also offering a summer points promotion offering 30,000 bonus points to holidaymakers registered with Ritz-Carlton Rewards.
Guests must register for the program before August 15 and stay for four more consecutive nights before September 9 to receive the 30,000 bonus, which can be used to pay for free stays, spa treatments, golf and other experiences.

Maharaja”s ”Tiger-Car” Rolls-Royce on auction
The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Maharaja”s ”Tiger-Car” Rolls-Royce on auction.
One of the world’s most unique Rolls-Royce adaptations is set to go under the hammer next month, with the sale of a model equipped specifically for tiger hunting.
The 1925 Rolls-Royce New Phantom was originally commissioned by Umed Singh II of India, the Maharaja of Kotah, for use while tiger hunting.
This led to some additions such as a mounted Howdah double-barrel shotgun, a rifle stand in the passenger compartments and a mountable Lantaka cannon.
The model also boasts a hissing snake horn and a hidden safe, while for night-time hunting, Rolls-Royce added two powerful searchlights and a separate machine gun mounted on a matching trailer.
The massive 8.0-litre six cylinder engine is set to a low-gearing ratio, allowing it to move through the jungles of Rajasthan.
Tiger hunting is, of course, no longer an option for would-be owners of this beast, as the wild tiger is now one of the most threatened species on the planet and hunting is illegal in most countries.
Bonhams, the auctioneers behind the sales, believes the model will sell for $750,000 – $1,000,000 and it is believed to have already been requested once by Indian authorities as a piece of national heritage.
It will go under the hammer on August 18-19 at the Quail Lodge sale, a two-day event held as part of Pebble Beach Classic Car Week and Monterey Auto Week in California.
The week culminates with the 57th Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, one of the world’s most famous classic car sales.

Europe’s cruise market is booming
The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Europe’s cruise market is booming.
Online travel agent Expedia has revealed that it is seeing an increased interest in cruises to Europe in response to cuts in air capacity between America and Europe.
The year so far has seen increased interest in European cruises from US consumers. There was “tremendous value” to be secured for travelers right now.
According to the firm, cruise lines are currently cutting rates for European tours, “without cutting services,” sometimes giving travelers a cheaper option than flying to the region and staying in a hotel.
Comparing the price of a seven-night cruise vs a seven-night trip including hotel, food and transportation in Spain and Italy, Expedia calculated that travelers paid 68 percent more for the self-guided trip vs an inside cabin (generally the cheapest option) and 33 percent more vs a balcony cabin.
While spending the bulk of a vacation on board a ship won’t appeal to everybody, Expedia points out that travelers don’t need to miss out on land excursions — although it doesn’t mention whether its cost comparison includes fees for such trips.
The European cruise ship market has grown by 165 percent since 1998, with reports suggesting that it is the fastest-growing sector in global tourism.
In Europe, some of this growth has been fueled by the popularity of river cruising, which uses smaller vessels to navigate restricted waterways that crisscross the continent .
Eearlier this year, the Cruise Line International Association said that it was a sector gaining rapidly in popularity, with shorter cruises being seen in Europe.
