Jimmy Choo staying true to his roots

World-famous designer Jimmy Choo may have come a long way since working in his family’s humble shoemaking business in Malaysia, but he never forgot his dad’s dedication to perfect footwear.

In fact, the Penang-born Choo, whose Haute Couture shoes are coveted by royalty and the likes of Madonna and Michelle Obama, says that shoemaking is in his blood.

“I felt destined to be in the shoemaking business,” he told AFP during a recent interview in Hong Kong, where some of his shoe sketches were auctioned off to raise money for poor students in China.

“I was 11-years-old when I made my first pair of shoes — they were a pair of flat sandals and I made them for my mother under my father’s guidance… (He) was never satisfied until a shoe was made perfectly.

“If it weren’t for him, there would be no Jimmy Choo today.”

After selling his share of an eponymous ready-to-wear line in 2001, the London-based designer now markets a couture line to deep-pocketed clients, particularly the growing number of newly rich mainland Chinese customers riding high on the country’s booming economy.

“We are seeing a lot of wealthy Chinese interested in our designs,” he said.

“Business has been affected somewhat by the recession — people are postponing weddings for example, spending less. But a lot of our clients have huge spending powers, so it hasn’t really impacted business too significantly.”

Choo is convinced that tailor-made fashion is the only way to go, despite the success of his ready-to-wear label.

“Clients come to me because we cater to their needs… Once you go couture, you never go back,” said Choo, clad in a fitted Armani suit.

“A person should never have to fit a pair of shoes, the shoe should be able to fit the person.”

True to his artistic roots, Choo has a bolt of inspiration midway through the interview, sketching a pair of women’s heels inspired by a floral centerpiece on the nearby coffee table.

“Shoe-designing is an art form,” he said.

“It comes from everyday life, but it must be architecturally sound and aesthetically pleasing.”

After working in restaurants and cleaning shoe factories, Choo earned his way into the Cordwainers Technical College, a venerable London shoemaking school which is now part of the London College of Fashion.

“It was important for me to work whilst studying to help ease my parent’s financial burden,” he said.

He opened up his own London workshop in the late 1980s, gaining recognition and international exposure after being featured in Vogue Magazine, but his star soared to new heights after Princess Diana was photographed wearing one of his creations, which now start at an eye-watering 850 pounds ($1,350).

Choo, these days a British citizen, remained tight-lipped on relations with his former business partner Tamara Mellon, who now controls the label they started, amid reports the pair had a falling-out.

“We once worked together, we parted ways — that’s it,” he said.

“I don’t speak ill of old partners. I wish them well… If you have the skills and talent, there’s nothing to be afraid of.”

Emporio Armani x Reebok EA7

Emporio Armani EA7 and Reebok have created the EA7/Reebok ZigTech line. The Zig-Tech line is Reebok’s line of shoes with distinctive zig-zag soles and this latest iteration is a continuation of the Armani/Reebok partnership which includes activewear and shoes. The whole line has a bit of a sci-fi-meets-sportwear aesthetic. Shown above is the rather architectural ZigLace shoe. The Reebok ZigPump which comes in silver with glossy patent inserts has midfoot strap to keep the foot in place and the classic Reebok pump mechanism.

You can tell a girl's had a big day at the races when you spot her trying to hail a cab in bare feet with her shoes slung over her shoulders.

Racegoers at this year's Spring Carnival can still kick up their heels but now they'll be able to wear them home as well, says Jennifer Hawkins, who has just launched her own shoe range.

The former Miss Universe has used her sex appeal to carve out a multimillion-dollar career by pushing a supermarket aisle worth of products.

She's now signed a lucrative three-year deal to be the face of Siren shoes with her JLH for Siren range - and comfort is the key.

Hawkins has apparently learnt a a thing or two from the head of the Miss Universe pageant, entrepreneur Donald Trump, since winning the competition and shooting to fame in 2004.

The one-time cheerleader from Newcastle has her own swimwear label, several endorsement deals, up to six properties under her belt and a $4-million dollar deal with Myer.

Launching her new capsule range for Siren at a lavish party in Sydney's Kings Cross on Tuesday night, Hawkins talked about how her shoes, made for the Spring Race Carnival, are built to last the distance on the field.

The shoes have a leather insole and leather upper with a double-lined sock which gives them a more luxurious feel.

Hawkins has a firm idea about what this year's summer fashion trends are and has put all her knowledge into her collection.

"The first capsule range is mainly for the races, I've done neutral colours. There's a pulp colour of neon yellow, that will be a trend for next summer, it's a fun funky colour," Hawkins told AAP at the launch.

"The wedge is amazing this summer, the thick square heel is really sophisticated and funky, it's got a bit of an edge.

"Definitely coming through are the square heels, and we can't forget about the stiletto that's always in, and then moving forward to next summer, points are coming back in.

"Fashion's always evolving and it's always bringing styles back from another era and that's what I like to do - go back and see what's been around and draw from that."

Hawkins revealed she has more JLH for Siren designs to come in December and winter 2011.

"I'm bringing out constructions for high summer and about 10 different styles for winter so it's growing already, it's really exciting times," she said.

"I wanted sexy, sophisticated, comfortable heels at a really good price range. I've been wearing heels for so long so I knew what I wanted!"
