Old luxury handbags get new life in Hong Kong

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Old luxury handbags get new life in Hong Kong.

Byron Yiu has made his fortune by turning traditional shopping habits around and re-selling rich women’s luxury handbags in Hong Kong.

Yiu’s Milan Station retail chain buys trendy bags — luxury tote or shoulder bags to evening clutch – from the ladies who lunch in Hong Kong’s upscale neighbourhoods.

Locally known as “tai tais”, the small and often thrifty demographic, rarely seen without Prada, Chanel or Gucci on their arm, provides the retailer with a steady flow of bags which are later authenticated by Yiu’s team.

“Hong Kong ladies are smart and money savvy. Unlike jewellery, the value of handbags will depreciate when they are no longer trendy,” said Yiu.

“It has become a culture in Hong Kong, the ladies will sell the old bag when they get a new one. We are depending on this small group of “tai tais” to sell us the handbags they want to get rid of, and they are the main supply source to other ladies”.

The idea not only turned traditional shopping habits on their ear and made Yiu a rich man himself, but the company set a record for the most popular initial public offering in the Asian financial hub’s history earlier this year.

Investors were abuzz with excitement when the firm, little known outside HK, went to market in May with an initial public offering oversubscribed a whopping 2,180 times.

The share sale smashed a 2006 record and outshone high-end handbag maker Prada, which made its own lacklustre Hong Kong debut around the same time.

“We thought we would do well but it was beyond our expectations that the response was so overwhelming,” said Yiu, surrounded by bags sporting names including Louis Vuitton, Chanel, and Hermes.

From a humble start-up a decade ago with a 100-square-foot (9-square-metre) shop, the pioneering retailer now has 14 outlets, with an eye to further expanding to meet mainland China’s booming demand for luxury goods.

While most customers hope for a big discount, sometimes as much as 30 percent off a bag’s retail price, certain limited edition bags are actually pricier as used collector items, such as the prized Hermes Birkin.

“Ten years ago, there was no such business. People would buy, use and keep the bags at home. When they are no longer trendy, they became trash,” said Yiu.

The company said its share of the proceeds from the float, which saw about 25 percent of the firm sold off for a total of HK$271 million ($35 million), will help it launch 24 new stores in several Chinese cities over three years.

The retailer currently has two stores in Beijing and one each in Shanghai and Macau, a gambling hub about an hour by ferry from Hong Kong, with planned new locations including Chengdu and the southern city of Guangzhou.

“China is like an unexplored oil field,” said Yiu, smiling confidently. “The market is huge, and they have a culture of gift-giving. Some people may not necessarily like the handbags they received so they prefer to trade in the handbags for hard cash.”

China is expected to become the world’s largest luxury goods market by 2020, accounting for a whopping 44 percent of worldwide sales, according to a report by brokerage firm CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets.

Yiu said Milan Station is also aiming to tap the European and US markets with an online sales strategy that would see bags traded on auction giant eBay.

“These are places where we don’t have plan to open stores in the short term so this is our new strategy, and it is a way for us to test the waters online,” he said.

And while few industries are recession proof, the current stock market turmoil and uncertainty about the global economy may not be such bad things for the retailer.

“When the economy is not good, people are selling more bags and we actually get some very rare items during the economic hard times,” Yiu said.

“We are like the Hong Kong Stock Exchange — people come in, buy and sell their bags. People would still want to buy the hottest item,” he said.

Chanel Launches New Boy Bag Collection

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Chanel Launches New Boy Bag Collection.

It takes a lot of time and dedication for a luxury brand to establish an ‘it’ bag along the lines of a Mulberry Alexa or a Hermès Kelly bag, but when Chanel launches a whole new handbag range, you can be almost certain, they will be instant classics.

The new collection will draw inspiration from an androgynous style based on a hunter’s cartridge that founder Coco Chanel used to wear herself.

“Chanel used men’s underwear to make dresses,” the house’s creative director Karl Lagerfeld explained. “She had this boyish attitude, in fact it is the very spirit of Chanel. She got it from Boy Capel, the great love of her life…”

The new line will consequently be called Boy, which seems like a clever move considering fashion’s current fascination with gender-bending styles and menswear references in almost all ready-to-wear collections.

On sale in stores from September, the new handbags will be available in a palette of red, grey, and ivory glazed calfskin, with prices ranging from $2500 to $4300.

Furoshiki Bag – Japanese Trend

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Furoshiki Bag – Japanese Trend.

The Japanese is really talented and ingenious nation. The whole world is fascinated with origami, the art to fold the paper to make different models. And today the fashion trend is furoshiki, so-called the ecological handbags which are greatly promoted recently. The concept of the nature-friendly handbags is not new and the Japanese is not the people who pioneered in here. The point is that no other nation has dared to make the handbags and call the ultra-fashionable accessory.

Furoshiki stands for bath rug, as such. And back in old times the Japanese never used to get naked in public bathhouses: they wore special bath kimonos made from cotton to bathe in them. The clothes used to get wet and the Japanese wrapped it into the cloth of textile to make the knot. And that was the first shape of furoshiki handbag which was demanded for centuries. The knot-tied bags were announced fashionable in Japan for the first time in the history of fashionable handbags. That is like the thirst of the Japanese to make ordinary things into the works of art.

In the end of 20th century furoshiki were popular in Japan as the wedding gift elements. They were decorated with patterns to symbolize happy life in marriage. The expensive and rare textile was used to make such wedding furoshiki. Later on the Japanese came with the idea of being friendly to the environment and found the universal substitution to the polyethylene packs.

The real furoshiki is made from square cloths of fabric from cotton, silk and other materials with the length of forty to eighty cm each side. Actually, there are no limits to make various furoshiki to the most varied tastes. They can be tiny and spacey, it depends on personal preferences.

The major point is that the cloth for furoshiki should be square and roomy enough for the item o carry on. And the furoshiki looks appropriate and effective when the rules are done. When the Japanese invention is used as the ordinary women tote from textile for every day wear, then the best choice is to have the cloth of larger size around a square meter or so, when it is enough to make the straps and drapery if any is designed. It is easy and comfortable to tie the furoshiki in the y way you like which make them look similar with functional transformer handbags. The furoshiki is comfortable to carry as a rucksack or justhold in hands. Sometimes multi-layer furoshiki is made when the cloths are equal in size but they differ in color and style. When folding at different angles, furoshiki masters create incredible versions of handbags.

For the last several seasons fashion designers favor for fashion trends conditionally specified as Wa-elements. In other words, this is all related to the Japanese style, including kimono, umbrellas, hairstyling, decoration techniques, painting and a lot more. From time to time the European couturiers make great play with some of Wa-motiffs in their collections to add some zest. Kimono is the simple way to have some Japanese exotic elements. Kimono-inspired fashion collections are well-known, while furoshiki is still not used as fashion accessory to be offered in most European collections.

However, the first attempts to introduce furoshiki as the fashion accessory were made by the French designer Marie Bouveault. She creates the collection of vivid summer handbags with humor prints called Mimi pinson furoshiki. And we are still waiting until the other designers pick her idea up.

The original version of tissue handbag was offered by the De Couture Company. The handbags of this brand look more like an envelope with attached leather straps to hold but not traditional furoshiki. The Dres Van Noten offered clutches from textile with the secret zipper clasp. The most intriguing version of furoshiki was offered by the Dutch designer Samira Boon. She launched furoshiki made from half-sheer vinyl employing the unique capacity of this material to stick together and detach. The handbags look unique though Samira’s handbags more look like those polyethylene packs the ecologists along with the Japanese struggle against and again furoshiki is still the trend to chase up and promote.

Women Handbags – From Sacks to Clutches

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Women Handbags – From Sacks to Clutches.

Women are known to be keen on stylish and fancy handbags along with beautiful shoes. They cannot resist to stylish pair of shoes and a handbag if they see the perfect match. And no age, no social status, habits or taste can do when these accessories are considered for the entire image. A handbag is the item, which is best to have in greater number. The more shoes and handbags a woman has for every particular occasion, the better is for her look.

The fashion critics suppose women’s handbags appeared as the alternative to lots of pockets in men’s clothes. There was no need to take on them personal belongings in the epoch of the Middle Ages but several coins, no matter copper, gold or silver they were. They used to have special small sacks which were attached to the band of the men’s clothing and women used to have on lace. Such sacks were in great demand till the epoch of Renaissance. Later Louis XIV, the King, who was known for his liking to fashionable clothing, had tailors make man's sleeveless jackets with pockets and all the court dandies replicated this detail of the wardrobe. Ladies went on carrying sacks experimenting making them bigger, decorated with embroidery and glass beads, and then consequently, the first women’s handbag was invented in the second half of the 17th century.

Marquise de Pompadour was the first woman who came with the idea to carry handbags to have all personal belongings as kerchiefs, cosmetics and other women’s things. Since then the handbag was called «pomp», certainly, and such handbags were made from velvet with dense laced flounce.

Till the time of 20th century women’s handbags were made exclusively from yard goods. Women acquired the challenge to hold rigid handbags made from natural skin and leatherette just after they were awarded the right to wear trousers and have their hair short.

There are special museums in every corner of the world that show evidence of ancient handbags of various styles. So, the museum of Victoria, the Queen of England, can boast with the widest collection of ancient handbags. The museum of handbags and purses is opened in Amsterdam with over three and a half thousand things to exhibit.

Today the handbag is treated as the detail of the women image and it is quite the same as the model of the car for men. 4th of October is the National Day of Handbags in Great Britain, by the way. And it is widely celebrated.

Some handbags launched by the reputed designers turned into the symbols of lavish style showing off the status and wealth.

Birkin handbag is on the top of the rating of luxury handbags named after the actress and singer Jane Birkin. It will take you around thirty thousand US dollars for this handbag made from natural calf, ostrich or alligator skin and the Fashion House Hermes is specialized to launch such Birkin handbags.

The brand Louis Vuitton, the largest Fashion House in France, launches handbags that are believed to be iconic in Europe. They differ is style and color, though the quality is blameless and classic style is preferred to others, though there may be some exclusions from time to time.

So, in 2009 the designers for Louis Vuitton offered something too fascinating and awkward at first sight- the handbag as patchwork made from fifteen 3D samples. That one was offered for $42 thousand USD.

The handbag made from the skin of the white pony by Fendi designers is available for twenty eight thousand Euros though it shows no signs of luxury or elegance that goes beyond of trivial standards.

Chanel House designers also excelled making the limited edition refined Diamond Forever Classic Tote in 2008 from the matte alligator skin incrusted with lots of diamonds. In spite of the fortune to pay for the handbag, that is two hundred and sixty thousand USD, the edition went out immediately, and every order was considered individually with partially since they wished their handbags owned by the elite only.

China’s middle class stampede for luxury handbags

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents China’s middle class stampede for luxury handbags.

It could be a queue for a pop concert, a top nightclub or even the opening night at the theatre. But the hundreds of people lined up in a Hong Kong street are actually waiting to bag a bit of luxury.

“We’re looking for new handbags,” says student Celeste Law as she queues patiently alongside her friend Karina Luh outside the supermarket-sized branch of Chanel on Hong Kong’s Canton Road.

The students, both 20, already sport impressive accessories — Celeste carries a Louis Vuitton monogrammed bag, while her friend’s is from Chanel.

Both work part-time and saved for over a year to buy their trophies.

“We want them because of the famous brand,” said Celeste. “What can I say? People will focus on your bag. It’s about feeling confident.”

Even on a weekday morning, Canton Road is flooded with shoppers happy to pay a small fortune for a luxury tote, shoulder bag or evening clutch in its jumbo designer stores.

Many are from the Chinese mainland, and some even carry suitcases to get their purchases home. The market for such luxury has extended far beyond China’s roughly 900,000 US dollar millionaires.

The market is now being driven by China’s burgeoning middle class, with the truly rich going ever further upmarket — happily spending tens of thousands of dollars on the right bag.

Handbag sales for Prada alone grew by over 80 percent in China in 2010, Sebastian Suhl, chief operating officer at the Prada Group, told AFP, while those of the group’s Miu Miu brand rocketed by over 500 percent.

“We believe we have only begun to scratch the surface of China’s potential,” Suhl added.

The brokerage firm CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets predicts China will become the world’s largest luxury goods market by 2020, accounting for 44 percent of worldwide sales and bigger than the entire global market is now.

Christina Ko, who blogs at HK Fashion Geek, said the Asian love of the luxury bag has become “a cultural fact. In the same way that Asians prefer rice to potatoes, they also prefer luxury handbags to non-branded ones.”

But as customers become more sophisticated, the demand is changing — bringing those who would previously have bought fakes into the market for the real thing.

“Middle class people are getting the Louis Vuitton bags, and the people who used to get them are now looking for something else,” Amanda Lee, who writes the Hong Kong-based blog Fashionography, told AFP.

Zuki Ho, a sales associate and mother, is one of the middle-class buyers boosting the industry: she owns 15 luxury handbags, and once spent HK$40,000 (US $5,135) “double her monthly salary” on a handbag.

She says she loves handbags because “I enjoy being watched on the street when I’m carrying the bag.” But she would never buy a fake — “I’m afraid of being found out,” she added.

Fakes remain big business in China, but genuine luxury is bigger.

And while women are a growing force in the Chinese designer market, men are not immune, competing fiercely over the most stylish ‘man bag’.

At the second-hand luxury handbag store Milan Station in Hong Kong’s upmarket Central district, bags sometimes sell for more than their retail price.

“People always ask for some kind of limited edition, a more expensive bag,” supervisor Jackie Lau told AFP. “People don’t feel guilty about it (buying a designer bag) because it’s like an investment.”

Customers can trade in their bags and take to the streets with a new one as often as they like, while those lucky enough to make it onto waiting lists for limited-edition bags can sell them straight to a second-hand store for a profit.

A waiting list is common for a truly coveted bag, with a wait of several months currently the norm for Mulberry’s Alexa bag.

The ultimate bag of desire remains the Hermes Birkin, which famously takes 18 hours to make by hand. The crocodile skin version uses the finest sections of hide from four crocodiles.

It costs from $9,000 to an astounding $160,000 for one of the top diamond-studded models, a Hermes spokeswoman told AFP.

Chinese women appeared immune to the “luxury shame” that affected females in other parts of the world during the global economic downturn, the consultancy Bain & Company said last year.

But while handbags are traditionally used to broadcast one’s success and good fortune, this too may be changing as more and more women join the designer-toting club.

Lee herself has a denim Chanel bag, a gift from family — but carries it “so that no one sees the double C (logo)”, she said.

“People would know (who the designer was) already if they were really into Chanel, from the shape and so on, but I feel like there’s no need to let the entire world know.”

Blake Lively was hired to be the spokesmodel for Chanel Handbags print campaign and now the first image has appeared online.

The ad, shot by Karl Lagerfeld, has the Gossip Girl against a set of mirrors staring at the viewer from her reflection and carrying the new Mademoiselle bag.

In contrast to singer Lily Allen’s playful Breakfast at Tiffany’s–inspired ads, Lively’s campaign feels edgier and more sophisticated, with a moody, Hitchcockian tone.

Camila Alves Talks Muxo Handbags

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Camila Alves Talks Muxo Handbags.

Long before Camila Alves ever set foot on a red carpet, or had paparazzi on her heels, the former Shear Genius host was a model. It was only a matter of time before Alves followed in the footsteps of model greats Cindy Crawford and Heidi Klum, transforming into a fashion forward mother and designer. Muxo, Alves' handbag line, was created alongside her mother, and draws inspiration from her travels across the globe, pairing soft leathers in a subtle and striking color palette.

theFashionSpot: The colors are just incredible. Soft blushes, muted purple...

Camila Alves: I was a little bit like "oh, purple." It's fun but it's not over the top.

tFS: These bags are great accents to complete an outfit! Just the right amount of flare.
CA: That's the whole point of the bag. You don't need to have a thousand accessories; if you have your outfit, it can be as simple as jeans and a t-shirt, or it can be very sophisticated. You put on the handbag and it will close the outfit.

tFS: Is it hard to design for such a large audience?

CA: One thing that I really wanted to keep, was that sometimes when you go to do things for the masses, the quality of the leather – of the product – doesn't stay the same, and we really worked hard to have the leather be as good, to have a great touch. The handbags are light, we use a linen lining, it's very sophisticated and clean. We have a great product.  I'm excited about it!

tFS: What's it like designing with your mom?

CA: We work together, we do everything together. My mom is the one who went to school for that so she has about three design degrees. She went to three different schools for it, she's like the expert, she can do everything from beginning to end. All the stages. I learn a lot with her. We do everything together, I'll do a trip and I'll tell her the colors that I saw or the things that I saw and then she'll come up with an idea. I'm really good with closing the product. We balance it off of each other, we do everything together, in terms of creating the handbag. It's fun and it's great, but it's also very tricky.

tFS: Do you ever butt heads when designing?

CA: Yeah, we work great together, but of course, we do butt heads. We're mother and daughter, that's gotta happen.

tFS: We love seeing your glamorous looks on the red carpet. Did any celebrities influence this line?

CA: No, because the line doesn't come from anybody. It doesn't come from me or from my mother or an actress or an actor. It doesn't come from that. The line comes from places that I've been, it's a lot of inspiration from nature. A lot of colors are earth tones, darts, and the stitching. A lot of the stuff is mostly inspired by trips. Brazil, New York, Grand Canyon. I don't really follow what trend is out there, what people are doing. We basically go on what we like and what we saw, and think we should share with people. We put it out there.

Most Expensive Purses

Louis Vuitton’s Tribute Patchwork Bag – $45,000

Louis Vuitton’s Tribute Patchwork Bag, LV’s most expensive handbag, has an even higher retail price. This hideous bag, made in 2007 from fifteen other bags exhumed from LV’s fashion graveyard their summer and cruise lines, to be exact actually sold out fairly quickly. One can only hope that the supply, limited to only twenty-four numbered bags, had more to do with that than high demand.

Hermes “Birkin” – $64,800

While a Hermes “Birkin” bag retails at $37,000 USD, the highest amount paid for one of these bags was $64,800 USD, sold at a Doyle New York auction in April of 2005. This black crocodile-skin features silver hardware, 14-karat white gold closure plates paved with 174 diamonds and an additional 310 diamonds on the lock. The 484 diamonds weigh in at 14.11 carats.

Leiber Precious Rose – $92,000

There’s a lot more going on with this purse than that, however. It’s lined with metallic kidskin and features 1,016 diamonds (42.56 carats), 1,169 pink sapphires and 800 pink tourmalines. For the purse’s metal components, Leiber used 18-karat white gold. Only one was ever made and it’s no longer available from Leiber’s boutique.

Lana Marks’ Cleopatra Clutch – $100,000

Lana Marks releases just one of these limited edition bags per year. Pictured here is the 2007 bag, made with metallic silver alligator skin and 1,500 fully cut, faceted black and white diamonds set in an 18-karat white gold frame. Each year’s bag is signed and numbered.

Chanel “Diamond Forever” Classic Bag – $261,000

The alligator-skin bags featured clasps set with 334 diamonds (3.56 carats) in the shape of Chanel’s trademark double-C logo. Eighteen-karat white gold was used to fashion both the clasp and the bag’s long shoulder straps.

Ginza Tanaka’s purse – $1.9 million

The most expensive purse in the world is a unique bag created by Japanese jewelry house Ginza Tanaka. It shouldn’t surprise you that the most expensive purse is covered in diamonds over 2,000 diamonds totaling 208 carats, in fact but the bag’s other features make it truly special. The luxurious handbag will be on display in several stores across London during the first ever London Jeweler Week. It’s being offered by jewelry shop Nicholas James for the phenomenal price of US $2 million.
