UK hotel unveils most expensive dessert

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents UK hotel unveils most expensive dessert.

Chef Marc Guibert at Lindeth Howe Country House Hotel in Windermere, Cumbria has created the world’s most expensive dessert.

It is made of exclusive ingredients like caviar and four different types of the finest Belgian chocolate flavoured with a combination of peach, orange and whiskey.

Styled like a Faberge Easter egg, it is layered with champagne jelly, a light biscuit joconde and glazed with edible gold leaf.

Topped with a two carat diamond, the Chocolate Pudding requires a 3 weeks pre-order and is priced at £22,000 £ ($34,000).

The dessert easily breaks the world record held by New York’s Serendipity 3 Restaurant which has a Frozen Haute Chocolate pudding at $25,000.

The world’s most expensive model car

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents The world’s most expensive model car.

Hailed the world’s most expensive and precious car model by Guinness World Records, this creation is based on the Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4.

The car was crafted by Robert Gülpen — who has also created miniatures of the Mercedes Benz 500 SL and Aston Martin DB5 from precious metals and gems.

The Lamborghini is made from carbon fibre like the original and its shell was milled using computer modelling data handed over from the Italian car manufacturer.

But, adds Gülpen, he wrapped a 1/1000mm thin thread of solid gold around the carbon fibres — a feature the original doesn’t boast.

The tyre rims have been cast from solid gold and platinum as has the entire interior, while diamonds have been inserted into the seat, headlights and steering wheel.

Sotheby’s will auction the car in December in either New York or Dubai with bids starting at $4.7 million,.

Domino's plans pizza on the Moon

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Domino's plans pizza on the Moon.

Domino's pizza has announced plans to conquer the final frontier by opening the first pizza restaurant on the Moon.

Domino's Japanese arm has proposed a branch on Earth's nearest galactic neighbour is the latest escalation in a pizza publicity war.

Rival chain Pizza Hut set the bar high in 2001 by delivering a pizza to astronauts orbiting the Earth in the International Space Station, but Domino's fought back last year in a series of events to mark the 25th anniversary of its arrival in Japan.

In December, the company paid one person Y2.5 million (£20,046) to work for one hour delivering pizzas.

The competition has been taken beyond the stratosphere now, however, with construction firm Maeda Corp coming up with a plan for a dome-shaped concrete Domino's restaurant on the surface of the moon.

The company estimates the entire project will cost Y1.67 trillion - some £13.4 billion - of which Y560 billion (£4.5 billion) will be required to transport 70 tons of construction materials and pizza-making equipment to the moon aboard 15 rockets.

Keen to make the most of local resources, Domino's said it will keep costs down by using mineral deposits on the moon to make the concrete, which is likely to cost around Y194 billion (£1.5 billion).

An artist's impression of the restaurant anticipates a two-storey dome with a diameter of around 26 metres and a basement level constructed of steel plating and an area to prepare pizzas. Staff would be required to live on the premises.

"We started thinking about this project last year, although we have not yet determined when the restaurant might open," Tomohide Matsunaga, a spokesman for Domino's, told The Daily Telegraph. The company also expects to be able to offer delivery services.

"In the future, we anticipate there will be many people living on the moon, astronauts who are working there and, in the future, citizens of the moon," he said.

A Planet Made of Diamond

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents A Planet Made of Diamond.

Astronomers think they have recently found a star that was transformed and condensed into a planet made of solid diamond.

The team was able to detect the “diamond planet” with the 64m radio telescope in Parkes, Australia, and found out that it orbits an unusual star known as a pulsar.

The scientists’ measurements indicate that the planet has slightly more mass than Jupiter, but is 20 times as dense.

With the planet likely to be made largely of oxygen and carbon, its high density means it is almost certainly crystalline, meaning that a large part of the planet may be similar to a diamond.

The pulsar and its planet are part of the Milky Way’s plane of stars and lie 4,000 light-years away in the constellation of Serpens (the Snake).

World’s most expensive city? Try Luanda

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents World’s most expensive city? Try Luanda.

Angola’s capital Luanda retained the unenviable title of the world’s most expensive city for expatriates, narrowly edging out Tokyo, according to a new survey.

The Mercer group‘s study named the Pakistani port Karachi as the least expensive city, with living around three times cheaper than in Luanda.

Oil-rich Angola is a magnet for foreign workers who push up already high prices inflated by a reliance on imports.

The southern African nation’s domestic production lags behind its neighbours due to the effects of a 27-year-long civil war on its infrastructure.

Another African city, the Chadian capital N’Djamena, was placed third with Moscow fourth and Geneva fifth.

Paris dropped 10 places to 27th while London dropped one place to 18th. New York at 32nd was named as the most expensive metropolis in the United States.

Mercer senior researcher Nathalie Constantin-Metraln said: “In most Western European cities the cost of living for expatriates has remained relatively stable over the last 12 months.

“However, many of the region’s cities have still dropped in the ranking. In large, this is because all cities are compared to New York and price increases there have been more significant than in most European cities,” she added.

Australian cities jumped sharply in the ranking, reflecting the local currency’s 14 percent gain against the US dollar.

The report, which is published annually to help companies assess compensation allowances for expatriate workers, compared the cost of over 200 items including housing, food and transport in 214 cities, using New York as a reference.

The world’s most expensive retail rents

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents The world’s most expensive retail rents.

As a shopping destination, Hong Kong has over the past decade charted a course towards the very high-end in brands — and it seems retailers are now paying a very expensive price for the trend.

With a 46 percent rise in rents, quarter on quarter, Hong Kong is now second only to New York in terms of what tenants pay for retail locations across the city.

Hong Kong last year surpassed Sydney as the second-most expensive city in the world, with the average cost being paid now hitting US$1,687 per square foot per year according to global commercial property company CB Richard Ellis.

New York still tops the charts with rents at US$1,900 but Hong Kong seems intent on closing the gap as the world’s leading brands continue to set up shop all over town.

Local media here have reported that even US casual retailer Abercrombie & Fitch has gotten in on the act and is paying HK$7.5 million (US$964,000) a month for a shop in downtown Central that’s estimated to cover around 12,000 square feet. It has up until now been occupied by high-end clothing company Shanghai Tang.

The fact that Hong Kong is the favorite shopping destination for mainland China plays a significant role in the demand for retail space here — a record 22.7 million arrived during 2010 and April saw 2.1 million cross the border.

Overall, retail rental rates grew 3.8 percent globally, year on year, according to CBRE.

Most Expensive Cosmetics

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Most Expensive Cosmetics.

Men, if you don't want your wives to spend a small fortune on beauty products, make sure they don't read the rest of this article.

That's because after searching the shelves of high-end boutiques and department stores, hunting across the Internet and speaking with the top luxury spas, we found the world's most expensive--and exclusive--age-defying facial products.

How expensive? The average price of the top ten products on our list is $402 per ounce. That is over 7,500% more than the price of anti-aging facial products sold at most drug and grocery stores, like Olay Age-Defying Daily Renewal Cream, which typically sells for around $5 per ounce. (More expensive than caviar, but less than gold or cocaine.)

From clothes to cosmetic surgery, given the whopping amounts of money that people are willing to spend fighting the effects of aging, it should come as no surprise that haute couture skincare isn't cheap. What should be surprising, however, is the fact that the claims many of these products make about reducing wrinkles and eliminating blotches are supported by very few unbiased studies.

In the cosmetic industry, the term "clinically proven" is often more marketing than science. Typically, the phrase means that at least one component of the cosmetic product has been shown, in one study or another, to have had some biological action, such as helping wounds heal faster by stimulating cell division. That the product has been demonstrated by a well-controlled, independent clinical study to have significant effects in skin, however, is not necessarily true.

Yet, as the baby boomer generation's youth fades, the revenue generated by anti-aging treatments is on the rise. According to the marketing information company NPD Group, sales of prestige skincare products in U.S. department stores alone reached $2.1 billion in 2004, up 17% from 2000.

So what makes these products so expensive? For one thing, many of them are made from expensive ingredients such as crushed pearls, caviar and exotic antioxidants extracted from rare plants like the Chilean evergreen tree. Other popular components are anti-oxidants like grape seed extract, alpha lipoic acid, chamomile oils and green tea--protectants that are said to reduce skin damage from free radicals. Among the most important ingredients are customized cell messenger proteins such as peptides and epidermal growth factor that stimulate cell growth.

The use of many of these skincare products can be traced back to a pioneering study that appeared in July 1989 in the New England Journal Of Medicine. This study showed that topical application of an epidermal growth factor accelerates the rate of healing of second-degree burns and partial-thickness skin wounds. Based on his findings, the study's first-author Dr. Gregory Brown, who is also a plastic surgeon, founded, RéVive, a skincare company in Louisville, Ky. The company's most expensive product, the Intensité Volumizing Serum, goes for $600 per ounce and uses a bioengineered molecule called keratinocyte growth factor that he says turns over dying skin cells eight times faster than normal skin can.

Brown justifies the expense by saying that the reason his products cost so much is because they use growth factors obtained from recombinant-DNA technology, which creates exact--albeit synthetic--replicas of the respective molecules in the human bodies. Adding to his expenditure are years of research and "enormous" production costs. "As you know," he says, "for any pharmaceutical molecule from bench to commercial production, on average, is a minimum of $100 million.

"We age by slow cell renewal and also by exposure to toxins, so I think an antioxidant of any kind can help the skin. But it has to be bioengineered or purified in a scientific way so you know exactly what the molecule is," says Dr. Brown. "Many of these products, they'll take drippings from a bamboo sprout or whatever--I just think that's a little voodoo," he adds.

"Toxic skin has many signs, including congested pores, pigmentation irregularities, wrinkles, accumulated surface grime and a sallow, gray and ashy withered skin," explains Dr. Howard Murad, dermatologist, founder and chief executive of Los Angeles-based Murad Inc. Murad's CitySkin Detox Treatment, which sells for $125 per ounce, contains glycolic acid and a host of antioxidants--all of which are said to neutralize the environmental toxins and pollutants that bombard the skin daily and encourage collagen accumulation and a proliferation of new cells.

Celebrities like Madonna, Liv Tyler and Susan Sarandon swear by Tracie Martyn's products--and her $460 Resculpting Facial. Offered only in Martyn's inconspicuous Fifth Avenue atelier in New York City, this facial involves the use of a special device that delivers electrical currents. The currents cause temporary muscle shortening, and have the effect of lifting and tightening the skin. Compared with many of the products on our list, Martyn's Firming Serum is a relative bargain at $175 per ounce. The plant-based serum has green papaya extract, Chilean evergreen, extracts of red wine and several epidermal growth factors.

According to Dr. Nicholas Perricone, inflammation at the cellular level is the single most powerful cause of the signs of aging. His pricey skincare line, N.V. Perricone M.D., based in Meriden, Conn., uses peptides--compounds consisting of two or more amino acids (the building blocks of proteins) chained together by what is called a peptide bond--and neuropeptides, which are peptides released by brain cells as intercellular messengers.

"While manipulating the neuropeptides, neurotransmitters and hormones that are in the brain to help create younger, more beautiful skin and slow the aging process might seem more at home in a Michael Crichton or Robin Cook novel," Dr. Perricone says. "Believe me when I tell you that it is not only possible, but is in fact the new reality."

Serums or moisturizers are typically the most expensive products within a skincare line, given their high concentration of costly ingredients. To maximize the age-defying effect that many of the products on our list are purported to have, experts recommend that you use a good facial cleanser, exfoliating scrub and mask, such as the Soy Face Cleanser, Honey Face Scrub and Umbrian Clay Mask from Boston-based beauty company Fresh, to help get rid of dead skin cells and keep pores clean. Their products, many of which sell for between $30 and $60, are cheap compared with most of the products on our list.

In the battle against sagging and wrinkling, the right creams and lotions are good but alone they aren't enough. Along with avoiding exposure to the sun, controlling diet and stress are crucial in decelerating the aging process. Foods that create a rapid rise in blood sugar, such as breads, pastries and chips, result in a burst of inflammatory chemicals that spread throughout our bodies. Stress triggers the release of the hormone cortisol, which elevates our blood sugar, and triggers the release of the same collagen-busting inflammatory chemicals that are generated by a diet high in refined carbohydrates. "This inflammation," Dr. Perricone says, "produces enzymes that break down collagen, resulting in wrinkles."

The big question is "Do these products work?" Many of the products on our list have been shown in clinical studies to do everything from minimizing lines and improving skin tone to increasing skin thickness. Instruments like cutometers, designed to measure the vertical deformation of the surface of the skin as it is pulled away by vacuum suction, and corneometers, which measure changes in the hydration of the skin, are among the tools used in these studies. However, if these studies were repeated using, say, olive oil, or even a generic lotion of any kind, it is possible that the results would be the same.

The point is, of course, that no matter how much money one spends, the aging process cannot be stopped. But, as many doctors and skincare companies promise, if your bank account is large enough, it may be delayed for a little while.

Oprah Winfrey charging $1 million for ads

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Oprah Winfrey charging $1 million for ads.

The Oprah Winfrey Show is seeking $1 million for 30-second commercials during the program’s May 25 finale, according to Horizon Media Inc.

The $1 million mark is reportedly more than last year’s ABC “Lost” finale, which commanded $900,000, and Fox’s $650,000 price tag for its “24″ finale.

The $1 million asking price is rare for a series finale, but it’s not the highest in history according to Horizon Media.

A 30-second commercial set advertisers back about $2 million for the 2004 Friends finale, while Seinfeld’s finale in 1998 earned $1.42 million per commercial.

Oprah Winfrey is departing her afternoon talk show, which is distributed by CBS, to focus on a cable channel she started with Discovery Communications Inc.

Most expensive loudspeakers

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Most expensive loudspeakers.

The New Zealand company Arvus has come with an exclusively stylish loudspeakers aptly titled “The Prerenaissance”.

Each pair of the loudspeakers has taken hundreds of man hours each and the result is of course extravagant and almost artistic.

Starting from the bottom up, the plinth is made from hand carved granite. Four chambers house a quasi-five-way design and the sound technology offered is a perfect match for the expensive looks. With 6 channels of amplification, the speakers can make up a total of 3000 watts RMS.

The design was inspired by such objects as a exotic cars, the Coke bottle and musical instruments. The angles were chosen to give the speaker a feeling movement and life.
According to Arvus there are dozens of finishing options, from wood (like you see here), painted, carbon fibre, and even stainless steel.

World’s most expensive painting on show in London

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents World’s most expensive painting on show in London.

Pablo Picasso’s “Nu au Plateau de Sculpteur”, the world’s most expensive painting, was to go on display Monday for the first time at London’s Tate Modern museum.

The 1932 painting set a world record when it was snapped up by a mystery bidder for 106.5 million dollars at New York’s Christie’s auction house last May.

It will be the first time the painting has been displayed anywhere since 1961 and prompted the famous London museum to create a new Pablo Picasso room to house the loaned work.

“This is an outstanding painting by Picasso and I am delighted that through the generosity of the lender we are able to bring it to the British public for the first time,” said Nicholas Serota, the museum’s director.

The painting depicts the Spanish artist’s lover and muse, Marie-Therese Walter, lying nude with the painter looking on.

Picasso met Walter when he was 45 and she was 17 outside the Galeries Lafayette in Paris in 1927, while he was still married to Olga Khoklova.

America’s Most Expensive 2010 Cars to Insure

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents America’s Most Expensive 2010 Cars to Insure.

Beyond the price tag, there’s maintenance and, of course, auto insurance. Luckily, Insure.com has made a list of America’s most expensive 2010 cars to insure.

The list includes only 2010 models and is based on the average insurance for a 40-year-old male with a good driving record and a 12-mile commute. The policies surveyed include liability protection and uninsured motorist coverage. The prices set by the insurers are based not just on the cars themselves, but also on the driving habits of those most likely to own such a car.

They found that the least expensive 2010 car to insure is the Mazda Tribue i at $1,070.25 annually.

The most expensive 2010 car to insure is the 6-cylinder Porsche 911 Carrera GT2 2-door coupe. That’s no surprise, as this sort of luxury vehicle appeals to those who’d like to test the car’s top speed of over 200 mph. The price to insure this 500+ hp monster of a sports car averages at $2,943.78 annually.

World’s Most Expensive Beach Towel By Hermes

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents World’s Most Expensive Beach Towel By Hermes.

I’m in New York City, where it is currently below twenty degrees, and although I have enjoyed my afternoon of snowman building and hot toddy drinking, a little part of me is really looking forward to summer, to the beach, and to days that last longer than 4 pm. And what better way to spend a day on the beach than spread out on a luxurious Hermes beach towel? Add a crisp cocktail flavored with something fresh and tropical and I’m ready to book a flight. Plus, this beach towel is super eye-catching, so there’s no way your hot summer bikini body won’t anstd out among all the rest.

The thing is that, honestly, there’s not terribly much difference between this beach towel and the kind you buy in department stores. Despite the $530 price tag, there’s just not much you can do to a beach towel to improve upon the design. The print is perfect, and the material is 100% cotton, but at 36″ x 60″, it’s not even the biggest beach towel around. So, why the exorbitant price tag? The label, of course. You pay about 400% extra to get that discrete little logo and understated orange box.
