Floating island now open in Seoul

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Floating island now open in Seoul.

The world’s largest artificial floating island has finished its first week as a major new tourism attraction in Seoul, South Korea.

Seoul‘s Han River will eventually be home to a floating archipelago of three man-made “islets”, but the first island, Viva, opened to the public last week.

At 3,271 square meters, it is the second-largest of the three and is home to a three-storey structure housing a 700-seat convention hall and several other attractions such as restaurants and video games.

There are parks, outdoor terraces and viewing points surrounding the center, while at night, the exterior of the building is illuminated with brightly colored light shows.

When the next islands open in September, the 20,400 square meter complex will offer three cultural centers, featuring performances, water sports and aquatic events.

The islands can accommodate 6,200 people and are set to make the Han River, which 59 million people visited last year, an even more popular tourist spot.

While artificial islands have been constructed before, most famously in Dubai, they have generally been formed by pouring sand on the seabed to create artificial land.

Seoul’s islands take a different approach and actually float on the surface of the river using an enormous buoy secured in place by 28 mooring chains, a design which ensures it can withstand changing river levels and bad weather.

The ‘everyday’ Lamborghini

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents The ‘everyday’ Lamborghini.

Lamborghini announced this week that it is considering adding an “everyday” car to its portfolio, raising figurative eyebrows across the internet.

For a brand long associated with the most expensive things in life, Lamborghini’s announcement at a Reuters summit seemed a little out of character.

But, argued Lamborghini boss Stephen Winkelmann, the brand wants to have something that can be used on a daily basis.

It will be the third model line from Lamborghini, which currently offers the €145,000 Gallardo and €225,000 Aventador.

It’s thought that the model could be a production version of the Estoque, a four-door car concept first shown at the Paris Motor Show in 2008.

Predictably, the announcement caused a storm of opinion on both sides, with Time describing the idea as “brilliant – though almost blasphemous” and Stuff Magazine New Zealand noting that it would join a trend from Porsche, Aston Martin and Ferrari for sporty yet practical four-door models.

On the blogs, reaction was more divided, with MotorTrend saying that the Italian firm shouldn’t “water down the exclusivity of the brand,” and another adding that “Lower priced models are called Audis and their lower priced models are called VW.”

On AutoBlog, however, users were more sanguine, commenting “I could see this working out” and several others praising the appearance of the Estoque.

Either way, fans will have to wait some time before anything is for certain — Winkelmann said a low-end model could be on the road in four years.

London’s sightseeing boats get pre-Olympic upgrade

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents London’s sightseeing boats get pre-Olympic upgrade.

A London tour guide company has revealed plans to build the city’s largest sightseeing boat ahead of the 2012 Olympics.

City Cruises, which runs river sightseeing tours in the British, said May 27 that it would launch its new 600-passenger vessel on the River Thames by Spring 2012, describing it as a “next generation leisure and tourism vessel.”

The design, which will be London’s largest scheduled sightseeing vessel, is being built at a cost of £4 million and will ferry passengers between popular tourist spots such as Parliament, the Tower of London and Maritime Greenwich.

The catamaran holds an enclosed, air-conditioned main deck with 360-degree windows for panoramic views, two bars and an open top deck.

It also features solar panels to continuously recharge the batteries, energy-efficient diesel engines and onboard recycling facilities.

London’s frequent boat services, provided by companies such as City Cruises and the commuter-oriented Thames Clippers, are one of the easiest ways for travelers to reach the east of the city, where many Olympic events will be held.

The city’s river services have been described by London mayor Boris Johnson as a “vital part of the 2012 transport strategy” and are expected to carry some 7.5 million people in 2012, up from just 2 million in 2000.

During the Olympics, organizers estimated that roughly eight percent of spectators could arrive at games events by boat — some 150,000 people.

Meanwhile, a new cable car project across the Thames in East London may not be ready in time for the games, according to reports.

The cable car, which is to run every 30 seconds to transport visitors over the Thames, between the O2 Arena and Excel exhibition center could be delivered after the games, London’s Evening Standard reported earlier this month.

Music and room service on new W Hotels app

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Music and room service on new W Hotels app.

When it comes to hotel apps, not all are created equal, as the excellent travel guide app from Fairmont and the concierge iPad app from InterContinental have shown.

But this week, hotel chain W Hotels pushed the bar a little higher with the release of the W Hotels Worldwide app, embracing travel, music and food all in one.

The free iPhone app offers information on the Starwood-owned brand’s hotels, as one would expect, with photos, maps and weather for each destination.

But it also lives up to the chain’s scrupulouslycultivated image of “cool”, adding music content and several other features that make plenty of other apps in the industry look a little staid.

Michaelangelo L’Aqua, W Hotel’s music director who is behind the Symmetry Live series which has seen stars perform in the brand’s properties, has lent his hand to the new app too, selected a host of tracks which can be played on the go.

Thanks to a collaboration with Coca Cola’s energy drink ‘burn’, new DJs will be given a chance to develop their skills at the ‘W Hotels and burn DJ Lab’ ahead of a global tour and, of course, being featured as streaming entertainment inside the app.

Another unique feature is the ability to access hotel services, bringing up the room service menu of the hotel in which the guest is staying, for instance, or allowing the tap of a button to alert staff of a requirement remotely.

The app also links directly to the W Hotel Store, allowing users to order items from their iPhone.

This week, travel website TripAdvisor released the results of a US survey that suggested 60 percent of Americans have downloaded travel apps onto their mobile devices, and a further 38 percent have used them to plan a trip.

Chanel Launches New Boy Bag Collection

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Chanel Launches New Boy Bag Collection.

It takes a lot of time and dedication for a luxury brand to establish an ‘it’ bag along the lines of a Mulberry Alexa or a Hermès Kelly bag, but when Chanel launches a whole new handbag range, you can be almost certain, they will be instant classics.

The new collection will draw inspiration from an androgynous style based on a hunter’s cartridge that founder Coco Chanel used to wear herself.

“Chanel used men’s underwear to make dresses,” the house’s creative director Karl Lagerfeld explained. “She had this boyish attitude, in fact it is the very spirit of Chanel. She got it from Boy Capel, the great love of her life…”

The new line will consequently be called Boy, which seems like a clever move considering fashion’s current fascination with gender-bending styles and menswear references in almost all ready-to-wear collections.

On sale in stores from September, the new handbags will be available in a palette of red, grey, and ivory glazed calfskin, with prices ranging from $2500 to $4300.

Royal Caribbean tentatively embraces singles cruises

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Royal Caribbean tentatively embraces singles cruises.

Royal Caribbean is to become the latest cruise line to add single cabins to its ships, according to reports from the US.

USA Today reports that the cruise line, which operates the world’s largest passenger vessels, will install its first single cabins on Radiance of the Seas, which is currently undergoing renovation in Canada.

Radiance of the Seas, which can carry 2,114 passengers, is seeing the addition of 15 new cabins, three of which will be single cabins on the inside of the ship.

Described as an “experiment” by Royal Caribbean boss Adam Goldstein, the notion of single cabins represents a significant shift in the thinking of the cruise industry, which bases its business model on having two or more people in cabins.

However, a shift in the demographic of the average cruiser, and early moves from some other brands, could see single cabins becoming more common.

Norwegian Cruise Line’s Epic caused something of a stir last year when it unveiled new “studio” cabins, cramming 128 of the rooms into a double-deck complex designed to facilitate social interaction.

At the time, Norwegian said that “the cruise industry has not embraced the large number of people who enjoy travelling solo.”

That may be changing as cruise lines grapple with a new breed of customer and new types of cruise, most recently highlighted by the State of the Industry 2011 report from industry alliance the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA).

The report suggested that the number of cruise vacationers was set to grow, with increases coming from specific groups including multi-generational groups and first-time cruisers.

The organization said shorter itineraries were becoming more popular, a development also likely to boost the popularity of cruising outside its traditional audience.

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Hotel Missoni Opens in Kuwait.

The new Missoni Hotel in Kuwait held its official launch party this week, a timely reminder that when it comes to fashion hotels, travelers just can’t get enough.

Guests have been able to check in at Missoni since the hotel opened its doors in February, but this week’s star-studded launch saw three generations of the Missoni family on hand to launch their second property — and confirm that properties in Oman, Brazil and Turkey are in the pipeline.

The Kuwait property now features the 18th floor Luna restaurant with views of the Gulf, although it’s still not quite complete as the 1,500 Six Senses Spa still isn’t open.

Aston Martin V12 Zagato

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Aston Martin V12 Zagato.

Aston Martin has unveiled the new concept V12 Zagato supercar ahead of its first showing in Italy.

The V12 Zagato is an interpretation of Aston Martin’s V12 Vantage by Italian design house Zagato, the latest in a line of collaborations between the two brands.

The first Zagato premiered in 1960 and was based on the DB4 GT, beginning a series of models which included the V8 Zagato, the DB7 Zagato and the DB AR1.

The latest model, which will be on show at the Villa D’Este Concours from May 21 “to gauge customer interest,” takes cues from previous models and applies them to the newest and most powerful model in the Vantage range.

Described as an “elegant yet brutal design,” the V12 Zagato features a handcrafted aluminium body with a “double bubble” roof formed of five separate pieces.

It holds a 6.0-liter V12 engine producing 380 kW (510bhp), set to be tested at Germany’s famous Nurburgring circuit this month, with a view to entering two cars at a 24-hour race on June 25-26.

For this reason, the new model has also been fitted with a 120 liter endurance racing fuel tank, although as performance claims haven’t been made yet it’s hard to know if this will affect the vehicle’s capabilities.

The vehicle is on show at the Villa D’Este Concours, which is open May 21-22 on the shores of Lake Como, in Italy.

Cycling comes to Morgans’ luxury hotels

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Cycling comes to Morgans’ luxury hotels.

Cycling fans will soon be able to get on their bikes at hotels from luxury chain Morgans, the latest name to add bicycles as a hotel amenity.

Morgans, which runs several high-profile properties including London’s Sanderson Hotel and Mondrian properties in Miami and SoHo, announced a new bicycle program this week, which will be rolled out across its properties.

Guests will be able to use Public J7 bicycles, a Dutch-inspired design destined for city cycling that features high handlebars to aid sightseeing.

The program will kick off in London, where a new cycle scheme has seen new cycle lanes popping up all over the city, at the Sanderson and St Martins Lane hotels.

Later, the service will be rolled out to Sanderson’s other properties, which include Ames in Boston, Clift, in San Francisco, Delano, Shore Club and Mondrian South Beach in Miami, and Hudson and the Mondrian SoHo in New York City.

Bikes are fast becoming the must-have hotel amenity, as tourists seek new ways of exploring cities while keeping their environmental footprint low.

Last year, Fairmont rolled out bikes from BMW across all of its hotels in North America, complete with miniature models for children, locks and helmets.

Scandinavian chain Scandic also offers bikes to rent at many of its properties, as does Four Seasons, while larger chains such as Marriott and Holiday Inn are increasing the numbers available at their properties.

Flashy fashion grows as India’s rich flaunt wealth

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Flashy fashion grows as India’s rich flaunt wealth.

In booming India, being rich is not enough. For the moneyed classes, it’s increasingly about flaunting their wealth in ways typical of the nouveaux riches in Russia, China or the Middle East.

India’s well-heeled used to be more shy about displaying their wealth in the decades after independence from Britain when a tightly-controlled economy and dominant socialist thinking limited the opportunities for showing off.

But many prosperous Indians are embracing conspicuous consumption, turning their backs on the mantra of frugality espoused by independence hero Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation who eschewed possessions.

“They have thrown off the parsimonious Gandhian phase when it was considered poor taste to flash wealth,” says Radha Chadha, co-author of “The Cult of the Luxury Brand” who has studied the affluent in Asian countries.

The biggest sign of changing attitudes to wealth and shopping can be seen in the stampede to India of flashy Western designer brands from Louis Vuitton, Prada, Chanel and Bulgari as well as sports car makers Ferrari and Maserati.

Attend any society event in Mumbai or the capital New Delhi and “it’s a brave woman who arrives without a designer handbag”, says Chadha, who is also a brand consultant.

In the past, dazzling extravagance was the exclusive domain of India’s former feudal leaders who splashed out on bespoke Rolls-Royce cars, diamonds the size of duck eggs, palaces and armies of servants during British rule.

Later, luxury-seeking consumers had to go mostly to boutiques in five-star hotels. But a shopping mall building boom is bringing to India the sort of air-conditioned high-end retail found commonly elsewhere in Asia.

“People are less inhibited in their spending,” said New Delhi furniture designer Raseel Gujral Ansal at an opening show of her creations last month as the city’s elite oohed over sofas, chairs, beds and tables.

Even Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has called for the rich to tone down their excesses and to “eschew conspicuous consumption”.

But Indian billionaire Azim Premji says the phenomenon is common in nations like China, Indonesia and Thailand where people are enjoying new wealth. “The first few years, people want to show visibly they are very rich,” he said.

He heads one of India’s largest outsourcing companies, Wipro, and is renowned for his frugal lifestyle and philanthropy in a field of domestic billionaires whose extravagance frequently makes headlines.

The country’s richest man Mukesh Ambani, moved last year into a billion-dollar, 27-storey skyscraper home in Mumbai with three helipads in a development that towers over nearby slums.

He once gave a $60-million Airbus jet to his wife as a birthday present.

“People always had money but now they are no longer afraid to reward themselves,” said Shreyans Group chief executive Ashish Chordia, an importer for Porsche and other sports cars in India.

Sales of prestige cars such as Mercedes and Ferraris accelerated 80 percent last year, despite punishing 100-percent duties and potholed roads.

“Last year was phenomenal,” says BMW India president Andreas Schaaf, referring to sales.

Aston Martin last month joined the list of luxury marques driving into India with plans to sell three models — the V8 Vantage, priced at $348,341, the Rapide at $483,146 and the One-77 at a whopping $4.5 million.

The Indian luxury market as a whole is forecast to triple to $15 billion by 2015 from $4.76 billion at present, according to global consultancy AT Kearney, though it still lags China’s which stands at $9.6 billion.

The number of Indians who have financial assets of over $1 million, excluding main residences, now stands at 127,000, the 2010 World Wealth Report by Merrill Lynch Capgemini says.

According to a new survey of 160 financial advisors by a private banking arm of Citibank, Indians are the most likely members of the global super rich to spend more on private jets and yachts over the next few years.

At the same time, observers say the new ostentation underscores how the divide between India’s wealthy and its poor is widening.

“It makes me uncomfortable how much people spend on weddings,” concedes one New Delhi society wedding organiser, who says families will regularly spend 10 million rupees ($225,000) on just one event in India’s multi-day weddings.

India is home to the world’s biggest number of poor people. Some 42 percent of Indians, or 455 million people, live on less than $1.25 a day, according to the World Bank.

India‘s statistics on health, infant mortality and malnutrition are worse than those for some countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

Shekhar Gupta, editor of The Indian Express, describes the well-off as “divorced and insulated” from poverty.

“We send our children to private schools, get treatment only in private hospitals, have our own security in gated communities, never need to use public transport,” he noted in a column.

At the glitzy Emporio mall in New Delhi, chauffeur-driven Mercedes, BMWs and the occasional Rolls-Royce or Bentley regularly pull up to disgorge wealthy occupants to shop at boutiques where handbags retail for $2,000 and more.

“I don’t take my mother-in-law here — she’s shocked at the prices,” said Shaila, a businessman’s wife, as she fingered a woven soft-leather Bottega Veneta bag priced at 136,899 rupees ($3,080) in one of the mall’s boutiques.

“I never tell her what I pay for things. She thinks it’s a lot if a handbag costs 500 rupees,” Shaila said, asking that her last name not be used.

Princess Beatrice’s wedding hat sells for £81,100

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Princess Beatrice’s wedding hat sells for £81,100.

The flamboyant hat worn by Princess Beatrice at last month’s royal wedding has been sold for the princely sum of £81,100 on internet auction site eBay.

Proceeds from the sale of the hat, designed by Irish milliner Philip Treacy, will be split between two charities: the United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, and British charity Children in Crisis.

The princess, the oldest daughter of Prince Andrew and a granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II, provided one of the most memorable moments of a dramatic day when she stepped out in the eccentric headwear, likened to a giant pretzel.

Other royal-watchers compared the creation to a toilet seat and it has inspired its own Facebook page, “Princess Beatrice’s ridiculous royal wedding hat”, which has a following of more than 143,000 people.

“I’ve been amazed by the amount of attention the hat has attracted,” the princess said in a statement on the auction site.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to raise as much money as possible for two fantastic charities,” she added.

Treacy, who is now based in London, designed many of the hats on show at the April 29 marriage between Prince William and Kate Middleton, which was watched by an estimated global audience of two billion.

The celebrated designer said he was “delighted, flattered and touched” by the 22-year old princess’s decision to donate the hat to charity.

“I hope that people all over the world will be generous and that this hat will benefit many. A hat is a symbol of positivity,” he added.

The piece is described on the site as “a unique sculptural celebratory headpiece” made of tea rose silk, adding: “This is a gravity defying hat!”

“I hope whoever wins the auction has as much fun with the hat as I have,” the young royal said.

David Beckham launches ‘bodywear’ line

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents David Beckham launches ‘bodywear’ line.

David Beckham has lent his face and body to Armani in the past, starring in the Italian label’s underwear ads to the joy of female fans worldwide, but it seems the star athlete has had enough of sharing revenues earned with his good looks.

According to Women’s Wear Daily, Armani‘s turnover almost doubled during the time Beckham was spokesmodel for the brand.

“It proved to me that there is a real market for good-looking, well-made men’s bodywear,” Beckham told the paper, adding that “the push to do something of my own really came as a result of my collaboration with Armani.”

He might have also been inspired by his wife Victoria who has proven over the past seasons that celebrity fashion lines can indeed gain a critically acclaimed following.

Their common business manager Simon Fuller — who also managed the Spice Girls at a certain point — will probably do the rest to make this a successful venture.

“With my team we have spent time working on the fit, the fabric and the style to ensure the product looks and feels the very best and I am hugely proud of the end result,” Beckham told WWD.

There is no word yet on when his underwear range will launch, but a new scent called Homme by David Beckham — developed with new partner Coty — is scheduled to be released in September.

14-year-old actress becomes new face of Miu Miu

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents 14-year-old actress becomes new face of Miu Miu.

Confirming earlier rumors, actress Hailee Steinfeld has been named the latest star to represent the Italian fashion label.

A Prada spokesperson told E! News: “I can confirm Hailee Steinfeld has been shot to appear in the new Miu Miu fall/winter 2011 campaign.”

The young actress, who bagged an Oscar nomination for her role in True Grit, was one of the past award season’s red carpet favorites, wearing everything from Prabal Gurung to Alberta Ferretti, but mostly opting for Prada‘s younger sister label Miu Miu.

When she made a front row appearance at the brand’s runway show in March, many were already speculating about her becoming its new face.

Steinfeld follows in the footsteps of other quirky actresses such as Maggie Gyllenhaal or Kirsten Dunst, who also starred in the campaigns, as well as Carey Mulligan, who has been closely associated with Prada recently.

China to open ‘world’s largest duty free complex’

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents China to open ‘world’s largest duty free complex’.

The popular Chinese holiday destination of Sanya is set to boast the world’s largest duty free complex, according to reports.

Sanya, on the island of Hainan in the South China Sea, is the southernmost city in China and a booming holiday destination for Chinese tourists, boasting an ever-growing number of resorts aimed at both Chinese and international tourists.

Now, it will also be home to the world’s largest duty free offering, some 350,000 square meters of duty-free retail space according to the Moodie Report.

Situated in Haitang Bay, Hainan International Duty Free City will feature a massive retail complex, a luxury brand exhibition area, a designer hotel and a major food and beverage area,.

The plans were unveiled by the China Duty Free Group at a May 16 industry event in Singapore. Phase one of the two-stage project will be open in two to three years.

This year, Hainan province became a duty free area for both domestic and international tourists, a bid to make it more competitive with neighboring Hong Kong.

However, its shopping facilities seemingly haven’t kept up pace, with domestic media outlets claiming thousands of tourists swamped a new duty free store on the island when it opened earlier this month.

Seoul bans fur in Fendi fashion show

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Seoul bans fur in Fendi fashion show.

South Korea’s capital city has told Italian fashion house Fendi to remove all fur items from a show of its fall/winter collection due to complaints from animal rights groups.

“We have received complaints from animal rights activists and saw negative public opinion on the Internet… we can’t let such a controversial thing be staged at a public property,” a spokesman for the city government told AFP.

Fendi has scheduled the show on June 2 at a newly-built floating island on the Han River, which the city wants to promote as a landmark.

The Italian firm said city officials last week threatened to cancel the event unless all fur items were removed from the catwalk.

Fendi described the short notice as “difficult to understand… in light of the months of preparation and cooperation” leading up to the event.

“I’m surprised to learn of Seoul city’s decision to possibly cancel the event if Fendi does not remove all fur pieces just two weeks before the event,” Fendi CEO Michael Burke said in a statement Sunday night.

The company, however, said it would continue to negotiate with city officials in the hope of holding the show as planned.

City officials said negotiations were still under way to hold the show, at which Fendi planned to present 40 pieces from its fall/winter collection including 20 fur items.

“This is the first time for us to hold a fashion show on city property so we knew little about how things like this work,” a Seoul city official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

“The show has not been cancelled yet… we are still working on it.”

Fendi said more than 1,200 guests including foreign and Korean celebrities, global media and cultural and fashion leaders were scheduled to attend.

Chinese luxury consumers opt for French products

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Chinese luxury consumers opt for French products.

French labels are the most sought-after luxury products for Chinese shoppers as a booming economy creates a growing legion of newly affluent consumers.

French brands are the top choice for mainland buyers, followed by those from Italy and Hong Kong, consultants KPMG said in their report “Luxury experiences in China”, based on a survey of 1,200 consumers from 24 cities.

“China continues its march towards becoming the largest luxury market in the world,” said Nick Debnam, the firm’s head of consumer markets for Asia Pacific.

“Year-on-year as this market becomes more crowded, it is harder for luxury brands to enter this space. We also see rising brand recognition,” he added.

According to the Hurun Rich List, the Chinese equivalent of the Forbes or Sunday Times rich lists, there are now 875,000 Chinese people worth over a million US dollars, and almost 200 of these are billionaires.

The KPMG study found that they are most fond of French cosmetics and perfumes, clothing and bags, Italian footwear and Swiss watches, while they opt for domestic brands when it comes to alcohol.

The survey also found that about 70 percent of respondents search online for information on luxury brands at least once a month.

“Luxury companies need to think about how their strategies reach key online influencers,” Debnam said.

The 1,200 Chinese consumers polled in the survey were aged between 20 and 45, and earned at least 5,500 yuan ($850) a month.

Elie Saab launches first fragrance

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Elie Saab launches first fragrance.

The wait is almost over: two years after the Lebanese designer Elie Saab announced his debut scent, the launch has been scheduled for this summer.

Called simply Le Parfum, the fragrance developed by perfumer Francis Kurkdjian (Le Male by Jean Paul Gaultier) will be available from July.

Kurkdjian came up with a flowery-woody composition of orange blossom, jasmine, cedar, patchouli, and rose honey that will come in 30, 50 and 90 ml eau de parfum bottles as well as matching body products.

If the ad starring Anja Rubik in a New York street scene looks familiar, it might be because the supermodel also features in DKNY’s current fragrance campaign, kissing her model boyfriend Sasha Knezevic on top of a New York taxi.

Riccardo Tisci Replaces Galliano At Dior

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Riccardo Tisci Replaces Galliano At Dior.

Reputed fashion blog Fashionista is reporting that Italian designer Riccardo Tisci is set to take over as the new designer for Christian Dior.

The former creative director for Givenchy is rumoured to replace John Galliano following his sacking over Anti-Semitic charges last month

“He’s also…openly discussing his move to Dior with certain acquaintances,” writes editor Lauren Sherman. “And while we still don’t think the official Dior announcement will happen until September, we’re pretty sure the deal is sealed.”

Tisci was the most evident choice for many, with French designer Haider Ackermann expected to take his place at Givenchy.

Tisci, who his known for his dark, gothic-inspired take on fashion, would certainly make for a big aesthetic change at Dior after Galliano’s flowerily flamboyant years.

Rare pink diamond fetches $10.8 million

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Rare pink diamond fetches $10.8 million.

An extremely rare translucent pink diamond fetched a price of $10.8 million at a Sotheby’s auction on Tuesday, the third-highest price ever paid for one of the pink stones at auction.

“It is the third-highest price for a pink diamond at auction,” auctioneer David Bennett told journalists after the sale.

The 10.99-carat, emerald-cut stone was classed as a type IIa diamond, with the type II category making up less than two percent of gem diamonds.

The pure colour of the diamond, mounted in a ring, is classified as “Fancy Intense Pink” by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).

Stones in this category are the most chemically pure and often have a rare transparency. They have been found in India and in more recent times in Brazil and Africa.

Valued earlier at between 8.3 and 14.8 million Swiss francs, the pink diamond had come from a private collection and had not appeared on the market for more than 30 years.

Sotheby’s said it was one of the highlights of its “Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels” auction in Geneva Tuesday.

Another was an emerald and diamond tiara dating from 1900, as well as Kashmir sapphires and Burmese rubies.

The tiara sold for $10 million, not including commission, at the top end of how it had been earlier valued.

“I do not think that the market for coloured diamonds has ever been as strong as it is today,” Bennett said.

A 24.78-carat Fancy Intense Pink diamond was sold for a record $46.16 million at a Sotheby’s auction in Geneva in November.

Copenhagen’s new design hotel opens its doors

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Copenhagen’s new design hotel opens its doors.

The largest hotel in Scandinavia opened May 16 in Copenhagen, another new entrant into the Danish capital’s rapidly growing hotel market.

Bella Sky Comwell is housed in two spectacular skyscrapers, each 23 storeys high, and offers 814 designer rooms with superb views of the city.

The hotel is situated in Copenhagen’s green Ørestaden area, some 8km away from the city center, and is aimed at both business and leisure guests.

It features a 23rd-floor “Sky” bar and lounge, a restaurant, a further bar, and an 850 square meter spa and fitness area.

The interior design of the rooms is clearly Scandinavian, but the exterior of the hotel is more impressive — two towers inclining in opposite directions covered in lines of glass shards.

Bella Sky Comwell’s unique architecture, described by the property as “like a dancing couple,” isn’t just for aesthetic pleasure — it helps everyone to get a good view of the Copenhagen skyline and the pattern helps insulate the building.

The property will also be one of Europe’s first to offer an all-female floor, with rooms and amenities specifically selected to cater for female guests.

Copenhagen is currently undergoing something of a hotel boom, with 1,464 rooms set to be added to the city’s existing portfolio over the coming years (600 were added in 2010).

By 2012, the Danish capital is set to boast 57 percent more rooms than it did in 2001, which should help cater for a uptick in tourist numbers helped by new low-cost flights and an ambitious marketing campaign from Visit Denmark.

Next month, hostel chain Generator Hotels will open a 650-room property on Copenhagen’s Adelgade, offering low-cost rooms from just DKK 200 (€27) per night.

Range Rover Sport Puts the Emphasis on Sport

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Range Rover Sport Puts the Emphasis on Sport.

he Land Rover Range Rover sits at the top of the luxury SUV segment as one of the only vehicles on the road today that offers both a handsomely styled interior and exterior, and bona fide off-road underpinnings. The only issue: a majority of Range Rover owners never drive a single mile off the paved roadways. For those people, we recommend the 2011 Range Rover Sport.

Yes, it’s smaller, but that doesn’t mean that it should be discounted as a lesser Rover. In fact, its size is what makes it the perfect cruiser for the suburban jungle. The car’s new range-topping 5-liter supercharged V-8 engine churns out 510 hp and 461 ft lbs of torque, which puts it up against the likes of the Porsche Cayenne Turbo and BMW X5M in terms of performance. Unfortunately, with a weight of roughly 5,500 pounds, the Rover Sport falls to the bottom of the list in terms of zero-to-60 mph times.

What is lost in performance, however, Land Rover makes up for in interior appointments and comfort levels. Unlike the standard Range Rover (whose cabin has a sort of old-world charm of wood and leather), the Sport features a more contemporary interior with a modern and tech-savvy console display. The seats, while still upholstered with the best leather, feature a stadium-style setup so that rear passengers are afforded the same view of the road as those in the front. While this may seem odd, it is a huge convenience when taking a road trip with a full car—especially for those prone to carsickness.

All in all, the Sport handles twisty roads and inclement weather with ease (thanks in large part to its Dynamic Response system and adaptive suspension), and it offers up exhilarating bursts of speeds with a torque-filled, rev-happy engine. For those who plan to stick to the asphalt, the $60,495 Range Rover Sport is a just a few points away from perfection. (www.landrover.com)

Practical Performer: 2012 Porsche Panamera S Hybrid

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Practical Performer: 2012 Porsche Panamera S Hybrid.

For those who think that hybrid cars are for pragmatic, fuel-sipping performance haters, Porsche would like you to think again. The German manufacturer is even going so far as to race a hybrid-powered 911 GT3 R in the GT classes of the American Le Mans Series. But Porsche’s performance-minded hybrid engineering is not just limited to race circuits: the Panamera S Hybrid is now available in the United States as a 2012 model.

Following the Cayenne Hybrid, Porsche’s second hybrid model, the Panamera S Hybrid, features a supercharged 3-liter V-6 (similar to one found in the Audi S4) that produces 333 hp. Thanks to the car’s hybrid components, this Porsche sedan even churns out an additional 47 hp via an electric motor. The 380 hp hybrid engine is coupled to Porsche’s new 8-speed automatic gearbox, which translates to a zero-to-60 mph time of six seconds, a 168 mph top speed, and an average of 35 mpg—yes, 35 miles per gallon. So before you write off hybrid cars forever, get behind the wheel of the $95,000 Porsche Panamera S Hybrid. (www.porsche.com)

The Biggest, Baddest Bull to Leave Sant’Agata: The 2012 Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents The Biggest, Baddest Bull to Leave Sant’Agata: The 2012 Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4.

The time has finally come. After three years of rumors and spy photography, a replacement for Lamborghini’s Murciélago was finally unveiled in March. The magnetism of a new V-12-powered Lamborghini—especially one with 700 hp—is undeniable, further validated by the fact that the Aventador LP700-4 sold out for its first year of production before the Geneva Auto Show was over. In short, this new big, bad bull was worth the wait for Lamborghini faithful.

As if its aggressively styled body panels weren’t enough to intimidate anything in its path, the Aventador hits 60 mph in under 3 seconds and carries on to a top speed of 218 mph. Apart from the ultra-powerful 6.5-liter V-12 engine, these impressive performance figures are a direct result of Lamborghini’s dedication to carbon fiber research—partnering with Boeing and Callaway—for lightweight engineering. Beneath the sharply styled exterior, the Aventador’s body is mostly made up of carbon fiber, which is a supercar standard for most exotics on the road today.

And while Lamborghini kept its traditional scissor-style doors for the Aventador, one step inside the cabin shows an impressive update to the interior. The likeness of the center console and dash display to an Audi is undeniable—especially considering the German automaker is Lamborghini’s parent company—but the Aventador somehow manages to retain most of its Italian flair throughout. And unlike the Lamborghini Gallardo, there is absolutely nothing in the Audi model line that comes close to competing with the $400,000 Aventador. That space is reserved for Ferrari. Naturally Precious

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Naturally Precious.

Nature is an abundant source of inspiration for many jewelry designers, but newcomer Brooke Kanani Sachs takes actual elements from the forest and beach and casts them in 18-karat gold settings with diamond and gemstone accents to create her one-of-a-kind pieces. The jeweler’s seedpod ring, for instance, is an actual seed she treated for durability, set with a baguette diamond center, and framed on a gold band. “The juxtaposition of these objects with the refined qualities of precious metals and stones is a way of paying homage to nature in a way that I truly see fit,” says Sachs, who trained for four years with an old-world craftsman where she learned the traditional lost wax method of casting. She continues to make each piece of jewelry from start to finish from her Hopkinton, R.I., studio.

In addition to natural resources, elements in nature also inspire designs. “I am intrigued by the anthropomorphic quality of trees, the ripples in the sand that are left behind by the waves or wind, bones, shells, rocks, horseshoe crabs, seedpods, birds, animals, and many other things that we tend to take for granted in our demanding lives,” she says. Her pieces start at $400 in sterling silver and range to $10,000 for items in 18-karat gold. (401.714.5172, www.brookekanani.com )
